When did we shift from soap to body wash?

Answer that question please.

First encounter: A few years back I'm on a trip with my then Editor to N.Y. for an awards banquet. We had seen the city and came back to shower before the shindig. The fancy hotel doesn't have soap in the tray. My soap had been replaced with body wash. There was small soap at the sink, so I was saved.

Fast forward: Last Saturday I'm watching football on ESPN and all the commercials that should be about soap now feature Men's Body Wash. I can see why the ladies like the body wash...its in a shampoo-styled bottle, has nice pumping action, isn't as slippery as the bar, travels well, full of fragrance, less waste(possibly: I know that left in a non draining dish the bottom of the bar can get quite nasty).

This morning: I try the body wash. Its just not the same. Not even close. Give me a bar of soap. The bar is solid. You can cut it with a knife if you needed. You can make soap and sell it on ebay. A bar of soap can be thrown at an intruder. Some bars of soap come with pumice...that's ace. Soap can come with a rope and be hung from the neck like uber-hygenic bling. Soap lathers more quickly. There's no plastic container, but a biodegradable box, for the green in you. Irish Spring. Lava. Fight Club.

Give me soap.

A body-wash shower is much easier to clean than a soap-scum shower, it works much better with exfoliation devices, and they tend to be more moisturizing than drying...You don't want your wife to have lizard skin right? Strange subject Dos +1

I believe Lava started the whole thing back in the day with their pump Lava Soap. My grandfather has some out at his work shed. And you can totally put pumice in it. Or beads of oil that burst and refresh your skin. Or glitter - yes I have some..lol. I think it is more sanitary as well to have it in a container rather than exposed in the shower.

The new Men's Health has an add for Irish Spring body wash. It shows a bar of soap with a bunch of pubes on it and says something like "Maybe it's time to switch to body wash..."

It's a marketing ploy. Total sham to sell more product. Bar of soap = use as little or as much as you need, just rub harder. bottle of wash = drains quicker and you buy more. Same thing with those damn Wipes! everybody has a wipe now. no bottles of windex, just windex impregnated wipes. no armor-all, just armor-all wipes. somebody figured out that if you sell a pack of 40 wipes doused in just a few ounces of "insert your chemical product here" you get 40 uses and its back to buying more! A bottle of the stuff gives the consumer the power to conserve and use less. they will have none of that! anyway, body wash pushes more product. ok -15 for crazy ranting phreak +1 for Irish Spring (smells good)

i agree with forensicsphreak. My girl goes through like 3 bottles of that stuff while im still using that bar of soap. And the bar of soap is much cheaper, go figure. What they really need is bars of shampoo. That would be sweet!

"like uber-hygenic bling" This line made me laugh out loud! One question: When you used the body wash did you use one of those puff ball things? If not, I suggest that you give it one more try. The puff ball thingy kicks ass! I never knew true cleanliness until I used the puff ball. :D
