The E3 coverage has sure been entertaining. The console wars are starting to heat up. Last gen, the undisputed champion was Sony with PS2. Nobody can reasonably deny that. As a BRAND, I would argue that the Playstation Brand is still stronger than XBOX. With the original XBOX, I am of the opinion that Microsoft used that product to enter into that market and basically learn what it would take to play in that space. They've taken the lessons learned from that experience and translated that into their current strategy with the 360. They are in it to win it. Sony has stumbled a bit coming out of the gate with PS3, but it's too early to count them out yet. They should feel fortunate that the 360 has had some serious reliability issues.
Sony VP of Marketing Peter Dille's comments at E3 kind of came off as defensive to me. It is clear that Sony views the 360 as a threat.
I am a current 360 owner and so far, I have extremely pleased with the content and capabilities of the console. However, I did have it crap out on me, and I recently shipped it back and received a replacement. That has been the only black mark I can give. I haven't had much temptation to buy a PS3 yet, though I may spring for the 60 GB version now that they dropped the price on that SKU. I really only want it for the Blu Ray and upconversion DVD capabilty right now. Once some of the exclusive games like Heavenly Sword come out, then the gaming aspect will come into play for me. Up until this point, I have been a big fan of the Playstation brand. I owned a PS1 rather late in that console's life cycle, and bought a PS2 at launch. I later bought a PS2 Slim, and I got a PSP as a gift. Bottom line, I'm a Playstation fan, but I still haven't migrated to the PS3. I think that is part of Sony's challenge right now, which they acknowledged at E3: migrating the HUGE PS2 install base over to PS3. If they are able to do that, they will be in good shape.
To be fair, I also have an original xbox which I still play quite a bit. I didn't buy the XBOX at launch however, I waited until their first price drop. Last gen, having two consoles wasn't that tough a decision since both consoles had so many exclusive games. I'm not sure that's going to continue for this generation. What are your thoughts?
