7. Everything? OK! I'll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max's toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog... When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out... But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa - and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life. - The Goonies

2. When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, looks you crooked in the eye and asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." - Big Trouble in Little China

1. May the Force be with you - Star Wars

Remember to add your own!

Yeah, that's a good point. It sucks. In a way it's like the terrorists win no matter what. Either we keep getting blown up or attacked with chemicals in our subways or who knows what, or we give up some of our freedom. I just think people might practically take a slightly different stance if it was their own wife/husband/father/son/etc. who was going to get killed at a young age for the sake of having the government not read their email or whatever.

I know it sounds like a talking point but, if we WILLFULLY surrender even ONE of our freedoms, then they have won havent they? W talks all the time how "they" hate us for our freedoms, I think HE hates us for our freedoms. Isnt HE the one taking them away from us with the aide of that POS rubber-stamp congress? Mike

Mo - I think this heart of the matter is whether we can move forward and uphold our Constitution. I won't argue that some of the new covert operations done in the name of national security won't help make people safer...for now. I believe that it makes the government's job easier if they track phone calls, internet usage, etc., etc. But the real issue is whether it's constitutional. I don't believe it is. I don't believe the Military Commissions Act of 2006 is Constitutional, either. I agree with you, then, that in a sense we've lost to the terrorists. And if these programs continue indefinitely, they will be abused and at no time will the government say, "Oh, sorry, here are your rights back."

The greatest weapon of the fascist, is the tolerance of the pacifist. -Mike Muir- I agree with some of your points there Biorod, but if you aren't doing anything illegal, what's the problem? I know that's a dangerous road to go down, but we live in a dangerous world. Remember, what doesn't kill us, only delays the inevitable.

The problem is that we have a Bill of Rights and elected officials that are sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. That's an oath to which they should be held. I may not have anything to hide, but I'm also protected against unreasonable search and seizure. That's a right feel rather zealous about. Just because I'm not breaking the law doesn't mean I want law enforcement searching through my house or my car or my person when I haven't done anything wrong. Yes, we live in a dangerous world. Our leaders ran for and were elected to their offices and, fortunately for them, they're provided with the resources to do their jobs AND uphold the Constitution. I believe that our government can respect our rights and fight terrorism. It's possible to do both. It may require them to think a little more and do more work. Ignoring one or the other is irresponsible and unacceptable.

BTW, I love that I've quoted presidents, writers, journalists, and philosophers and you quoted Mike Muir. I own that album and actually listened to it a few weeks back. Good stuff, but I wouldn't trust Mike Muir to run anything. :D

Well, the thing is that the constitution wasn't written with terrorists in mind. Times have changed. Maybe if the needed measures go against the constitution, maybe it's time to amend it? This is a unique problem because you have people who blend in with their surroundings and look like normal citizens, so spying on their government won't work because they don't have one. And it isn't a country that you're fighting against, so the usual diplomacy is out the window. They're perfectly happy to blow themselves up, so punishment as a deterrent won't work (with the possible exception of torture, which is perhaps going too far). Is there another possibility that I'm missing besides 1) getting blown up left and right by the terrorists or 2) letting the government use intelligence to stop the attacks? I'm not a rabid Bush fanatic, but he must be doing something right if we haven't had a single incident of terrorism on our soil since 9/11. I guarantee it's not because the terrorists had a change of heart and joined hands to sing, "We are the world." I'm actually nervous about staying in NYC if Bush is replaced by some wussy Neville Chamberlain clone in 2008 who thinks the terrorists will see the light if we're nice to them. I think it's hyperbole to say that the terrorists have won if we surrender even one freedom. So, if you lose the freedom to carry a pocket knife on an airplane, does that mean the terrorists won and Bush is an evil dictator? No. Put yourself in Bush's shoes. He has to make decisions on whether or not to try to save lives -- real lives, not just "other people" somewhere, but real actual people -- or keep freedoms the way they were before 9/11 and risk another attack that kills thousands of husbands, sons, wives, daughters, parents, fiancees, etc. There are tons of people out there who would love nothing more than to strap a bomb to themselves and blow up as many civilians as possible. Let's not forget what we're up against and what the alternative is to increased security. My $0.02.

That's where we disagree - Bush doesn't have the authority to decide whether we keep our freedoms. He can make decisions and introduce legislation that must pass judicial scrutiny, but the Constitution is not his to amend. It's presidents like him that make me happy we have a system of checks and balances. Obviously the Constitution wasn't written with terrorists in mind but with tyrants in mind. Our founding fathers knew what they were doing. Yes, 200+ years have passed, but the way that men and governments wield power has not changed. We just disagree on this topic. I'd rather die in a terrorist attack and see my entire family die in one rather than see the U.S. become a police state. That's patriotism. Our time here is limited and it's our responsibility to leave this world a better place when we depart. I don't think we'll do that by amending the Constitution. I'm not saying we throw the doors open, abandon all attempts at increased security, and stop monitoring terrorists. Not by any means. I just think we can accomplish our mission and be true to our democracy.

My thinking is that freedom doesn't do you any good if you're not around to enjoy it. I hope there are some ways that we can discover terrorist plots without excessive Big Brother spying. Perhaps with having secret agents infiltrating terrorist cells to gather information, stuff like that. I read a book (See No Evil) several months ago by a former CIA agent (Robert Baer). It read kind of like a Tom Clancy novel except it was all true. The big point that he made in the book is that our intelligence agencies have really dropped the ball on good, old fashioned spying (things like infiltrating terror groups, not so much Big Brother techniques on Americans) over the last decade or two. He said that 9/11 probably would have been preventable if our intelligence groups hadn't gotten watered down by politics and bureaucracy and inept leadership (not referring to Bush, referring to leaders in the CIA and such over the last 10-20 years). So maybe there's a way to have our cake and eat it too. :)

I've found that living in what is probably the #1 terrorist target (NYC) has changed my thinking on the liberty/safety debate. It's one thing to stick unwaveringly to your principles when the odds of terror hitting your particular town are almost nil, and the terror victims are "other people." It's different when you recognize places on the news, places that you see everyday first-hand, as a terror target that was thwarted by government intelligence. Or maybe it's all in my head and I should stop watching 24. :)

I understand your point Mo. I don't want to die either, but I honestly believe more is at stake than just my life. I'm imaging what kind of world future generations will live in and it scares me. My favorte quote in all of them is the LBJ one, "You do not examine legislation in the light of the benefits it will convey if properly administered, but in the light of the wrongs it would do and the harms it would cause if improperly administered." Juxtapose that with the Miltary Commissions Act of 2006 and you can see how it can and, if it survives judicial scrutiny, will one day be abused.
