When I was a little kid and I’d just finished watching Return of the Jedi, I began hearing the rumors that there were, in fact, nine chapters to the Star Wars saga. Part of that rumor was Lucas had no imminent plans to make the other six.
That caused me no small amount of grief. By the time he got around to it, I’d be old. Would I even care about Star Wars when I was old? I needed to know what happened NOW, dammit (yes, I swore as a kid; visited the office several times).
Flash foward some 23 years later and here I sit, waiting for Halo 3/Forerunner/Whatever the hell you want to call it. Sure, I play a lot of Halo 2 now, but will I still play that much next year when the next Bungie game comes out? If I do not keep playing, will that not be just like starting over from a skill standpoint?
Christ, I’ll be a noob all over again. I’ll be an Older Noob. At this point, I’m going to be like 34 when Bungie’s next comes out. What if the wife and I procreate between now and then? Will I even give a damn about a video game?
Why am I concerned by this?
It’s unhealthy, really, this obsession with Halo 2. I play the damn game six days a week, at least a couple hours a day. I’ve have had honest-to-God shouting matches with my real-world friends because of this game.
Other games? Eh.
Sure, I bought a 360 on Launch Day. Sure, I own GWAR (GWAR!). Does that make me an Xbox Fanboy? Possibly, though that’s a story for the 2o2p front page.
Let’s face it, whatever I was before Halo -- probably a "casual gamer" – I’m not a gamer. I’m a Halo player.
I work on map strats. I play in tournaments. I’m not even that good (and because of that, I’m taking a lesson or two from a real Pro).
Does not Bungie see? I can’t wait that long. Time is all I have. Time is wasting. I’ll have my first gray hair before Halo 3 comes out.
Bungie, why have you forsaken me?
Halo 2, I wish I could quit you.
