I apparently suck at GoW

I just got this game and I'm embarrased to say its kickin my ass. I'm not stranger to shooters, although I was trained on the mouse and WASD of FPS, so from the start I'm uncomfortable using a controller. I either that or I need more practice on the A-button mechanics, which often send me running around in directions I'm not intending to go. Usually into death. I haven't even thought about online--I'm sure that would be hilarious for my opponents. I was an origina UT junkie so I really want to like this game, but if I can't get over feeling like I'm always running around like a chicked with it's head cut off, I probably never will. Any suggestions?

Sounds like my experience with the controllers for the first time. Practice, just keep playing and don't worry about it.

There is a learning curve the the game, no question. It's uniquely controlled. Play it through on casual first to get the hang of the controls. I'd recommend not jumping online until you've finished it on Insane difficulty. Also hook up with an experienced player and play some coop. Your coop progress is the same as your 1p progress, so you can get a helping hand at anytime. I just re-bought the game used and should have it by the end of the week. Shoot me a FR if you want to play some coop.
