Workaholic Lifestyle

One of the reasons I decided not to stay in the US was the workaholic lifestyle that has been adopted in mainstream society. Somehow it has been inscribed in our psyche that the longer we work the more successful will be at our jobs. Sometimes this is true but at what expense? We take for granted our family, we are overwhelmed with stress, don’t enjoy life as much. We take one or two weeks off so we can spend it somewhere with our family and somehow forget about work. Many of us just say, “Well you know what? That’s life”. No it isn’t, maybe in the US, but not here. I work in Honduras as an engineer. I have a supposed work time which is never enforced. Supposedly I work from 7 to 5 and get two hours off for lunch. But it’s not about how many work hours you have in a day, it’s about how much you get done. Sometimes if I can get most of my work during the morning I take off at 3 to go wakeboarding. That freedom gives me the force to go on and on exceeding at my job. No worker is more effective than a well rested happy worker. Happiness is really the key to productivity. If your workers are happy, you will have a very productive unit.

When I first started, as most of us do, I worked non stop. Worked weekends for as long as I can remember. Then I hit a slump. My work suffered for it. It’s until you learn to take the time off you need and think with a clear mind when you will most excel at what you do.

So please, take sometime off this Memorial Day weekend. Take your family out and enjoy yourselves. Because this mad world starts over on Tuesday.

Here are some pics of my trip to the Keys here in Honduras so you can relax a little better.

Nice pics! Great post and you are correct, sir. You would probably enjoy "The 4 Hour Work Week." I spent a lot of time in Europe (plus Central and South America) and miss just sitting around for hours after dinner, sipping beer or wine, talking with friends and enjoying life. Our entire culture in America has slipped away from this and entered a rat race of consumption. It's too bad. Enjoy the good life!

nice pics bro. You hit the nail right on the head. Recharging the batteries is very important in staying a healthy, happy, productive employee. When I get home, the cell phone is turned off, and my wife gets my full attention... well she competes with the 360. There is definitely more to life than work.

I've had a number of events happen over the past 5 years that have given me a 'dont give a shit about work' mentality. Sure i'm still a good worker, show up on time, do my job etc. But once it's time to go, i'm gone. I don't think about work until i walk back into the office the next day. Why work my ass off for someone else? Companies don't give a shit about their employees anymore so why should the employees give a shit about the company? I don't. I work my 40 hours, collect my pay, take every single vacation day, sick day and floater vacation day and live my life. I'm hoping ot retire by the time i'm 50. LIfe's too short to spend it work'in for the man.
