It is making things evolve in the console industry. Lets be clear this is mainly about the console industry, not PC, although alot of things spill over. Look at Episode 2 and how long PC gamers are waiting because Valve decided to latch on to consoles through EA.
There are pros and cons to renting. And that guy makes a point, they help weed out the turd games.
Rental whores are may be considered a problem, but these people would probably play pirated games if they couldn't rent, possibly. The publishers are losing money to rentals stems mostly from those people who never buy.
By what was said at the roundtable, the games that get hurt the most are single-player games with a set time. People can rent them from GF and keep until they finish then bail on it. Another reason DLC is good and will probably continue is to give more of a reason to hold onto it. Which is another reason I will never stop PC gaming. Putting visuals and sound aside, this is another reason why its way better to play Oblivion on a PC.
I have no problem with digital distribution. But if I BUY a product I want a hard copy.
Re-sale at Gamestop and EB hurts. Besides the fact that the consumer is barely getting a good deal. I mean, new games are $5 off. Older ones if you bother to look online are almost the same price if you can find them. I don't support that system anymore. I can get older games new at discount prices from newegg or amazon. I used to trade in games up until recently. But you can't with PC games. I have a huge library of PC games. Is it bad having all those old games around? No.
Add to that - if I have a game I believe sucks ass and I want to see the publisher lose money I sell it back to GS or EB. So I do actually use it but it works one-way.
Great post. I really thought that all 3 panelists were very well spoken and informed. ALl gamers should see this vid to see where our industry is heading.
