Here is my first review of Oblivion after 4 hours of play.

Ok if you don’t have a High Def TV... Go buy one. In non High Def mode the game is ok, but pales compared to High Def.

Let us talk about the game, its good and bad points, its features, and its pain in the ass things… First off let us get the bad out of the way.

Bad

-         Easy, even with the difficulty up its easy
-         Controls are arcade like (but this isn’t super bad, just a little bad)
-         Load times, into the store... load... out of the store no load... lots of little loads as I run around the world.
-         Little to easy to hit a button and get busted. I was put in Jail for riding a horse because I was uncomfortable and moved hit the button, in jail... CRAP.
-         Too little with Captain Picard... Patrick Stewart I hope your in more later in the game in some sort of flash back
-         There is not enough hours in the day

Second the good

Good
-         Graphics… Here is a quote when I first got out of the sewer “Oh my fucking GOD that is gorgeous”
-         Textures I was worried they would have lowered them some on the Xbox 360 but nope, they are high res, bump, normal and spec mapped on the models
-         Sound great sounds, sometimes I feel I have heard the sound before but rehash from Morrowind isn’t bad.
-         Music the music isn’t perfectly timed to the situation, but it’s very well done, Some of the best RPG game music I have heard in a long time.
-         Voice Over’s lipped synced and wonderfully done. The first time someone talks to up close your like whoa...
-         The world is ALIVE. People come and go, close up shops, buy horses, get lost, run around, remember you, etc. It’s really for the first time a Single Player Game with a True World to it.

Third let us talk the experience

Ok, if you are not a HARD CORE RPG Fan, rejoice, this isn’t a hard core RPG, dungeons are VERY easy to work through (5 down so far, and were easy), the difficult can be set to “My baby could kick your ass mode”, and its not hard to go... mnn I need to travel here, click the spot on the map and poof travel time.

Ok, if you are a HARD CORE RPG Fan, rejoice because you can definitely lose yourself in this game, just wandering around, finding dungeons, ruins, and caves, is great. Getting attacked by Imps, Wolves, etc is fun. Plus the world is so full and rich you won’t care if at times it’s easy.

There is some reading of books... READ THEM. They contain important information.

There is some basic puzzle solving, and it is basic puzzle solving.

Make sure you check everything. You need to find keys to progress, and they are out in the open, but you need to look.

Save OFTEN, because if you become a Vampire you will regret it, really sucks.

Graphics – 9/10 – Damn near perfect on the Xbox360 so far. But I am knocking a point off because some of the faces look weird from angles.

Sound – 8/10 – Very good, some repeated sounds from Morrowind, but I really wanted some Dolby 5.1 melting effects.

Music – 9/10 – Excellent, but at times just doesn’t fit the action, but it does quickly adjust, and is the best RPG music I have heard probably since Baldur’s Gate 2

Game play – 7/10 – Knocking 3 points off for how easy it is. Sorry Bethesda, easy for 200 hours doesn’t make me want to play it again. I will, but come on.

Overall – 8/10 – Not perfect, but far from bad… So far after 4 hours I will say I am infatuated with my new game, and really can see myself losing my way in the world for hundreds of hours.

The plan is to play for 4 more hours and then see what I see (if I can see anything)

Check back for a full review in a few days when I have 30+ hours in.

There is a slider in the option menu where you can increase the difficulty.  I am not finding the game too easy, yet.  My thief with light armor has died twice to zombie attacks and the first time I had forgotten to save often and had to restart the dungeon.
