But with the latest Final Fantasy game coming this month I hope this is the final, Final Fantasy.
Ever since they jumped the gaming shark with Final Fantasy VII, the series has lost much of its glory by adding more and more cinematic and obtuse story telling instead of ending on a high note they are beating a dead horse. It was still a great game, but started showing that the developers wanted more of a movie experience then a gaming experience.
Now before people start replying and flaming me for saying this, I have two points to make. One is that this is my opinion, and an opinion coming from a hard core RPG fan that has played all the Final Fantasy games (yes even importing Japanese hardware to play the original games), many of the Japanese RPG’s and most Western RPG’s. Two is that the Final Fantasy games are failing to innovate beyond updating graphics and slight game play updates usually to the lack luster battle system.
Final Fantasy’s popularity seems to be mostly with the die hard fans that seem to believe that the series is the only good RPG series, but completely ignore other series such as Dragon Quest, Xenosaga and Disgaea, three series with superior game play and more solid stories then the cinematic disjointed story telling of the Final Fantasy series. It really seems that the added hours of CGI is what sells the Final Fantasy series since that seems to be really the only thing that series has over the other games.
Square please re-envision the series, even take it back to its roots or give us a new series. At least until you can deliver Dragon Quest IX or even a console based Final Fantasy Tactics.
Flame on!
