Resistance and Gears

Resistance is no Gears of War, not by a long shot.. but Gears is no Resistance not by a long shot either. This goes against what I have said before but just after finishing it again, my mind has changed.

Both are great games with some issues, but really in the long run for fun replay value I have to say Resistance is the winner. But before you flay me, here are my reasons why.

Resistance Fall of Man on the PS3 is a nice looking shooter with some great game play that does not break the mold for First Person Shooters. But what it does do and do very well is amp up the cool factor in level design and removing the fact that each area does not need to look like the last area syndrom which many games suffer from today.

It is also a long game and while I have not timed my self, it does come in at around 15-16 hours of play time. Which is plenty, even a little to long for a FPS.

But the main fun factor is the game changes things up constantly from driving a tank, running and gunning with tons of friendly troops, to going on a corridor shoot, to driving a mech, to a jeep, etc in open fields, sewers, underground bunkers, city scapes, towns, snow and ice areas etc. This really is something which Gears misses out on, but makes up for with chainsaw, great game play, rumble *cough* and some of the best AI.

While both games are really impossible to compare they are the "flagship" games of the holiday season past and worth checking out Resistance if you own a PS3.. its not a game that you should buy just for a PS3 though, unless you LOVE FPS..

Resistance is a must buy and 8.9/10

The issue is, is Resistance worth $660.00? I've not seen a single PS3 game that I cannot get on the 360 and have better graphics -or- that I'd actually want to purchase. Which is proof in the industry with the slow sales of the PS3. It's just not worth the buy if you don't have the console.

nope not worth the cost of the PS3 on top, unless your a super fan.. not yet anyways.. Graphically ya it can easily be done on a 360 (except I am wondering about the insane amount of textures they use, might be an issue on a DVD9).. Plus I do think the 360 could have done better lighting and shaders.. but its a nice looking game, and a few times beautiful scary with the insane amount of crap going on with zero slow down..

Oh great, now I'm going to have to play more levels in Resistance thanks to your review. So far I've thought it's okay and the multiplayer is very good. I think the multiplayer is much more accessible than GoW, very easy to get into without any weird quirks. I've just been spending most of my time on the 360, which in the end speaks volumes.

The single player portions of FPS's don't interest me. How does R:TFOM's multiplayer hold up to GoW?

MP is fun, but quiet, no one talks.. no one has a head set, and it can get laggy I found..

and nobody owns one I hear, so the crowd isn't nearly as big as it is on XBL. CodeMonkey

@Code - yep, I think the Sony network will be in trouble if they start selling.. plus doing updates during the day on the network is silly. they have a lot to learn

I agree totally. I played through Gears once with a friend, and once alone. Haven't felt the slightist urge to play the campaign since. I have to imagine (never playing RFOM) single player replay value is better. But the MP broke new ground. Gears is the most unique online action game since Splinter Cell first went 2on2. If RFOM is a standard shooter, well, there are plenty of those on the 360 and PC.
