With this trilogy complete, Master Chief has become more than an icon, he has become a bonafide inspiration (a role-model, if you will). Granted, he has always captured the fans attention. But in the first game, he was just a really cool character: the video game (Halo CE) itself was still only considered a game, albeit a very good one.
In the second game, he jumped up to "icon status"; recognizable almost anywhere in the world. This third game (along with the movie) will catapult him into the highest echelons of fictional heroes. He could easily be categorized with other greats such as Batman and Superman.
Then from a franchise/marketing perspective, Halo has a huge possibility to follow in the footsteps of Star Wars. There are already 3 novels (with one more on the way). A Halo graphic novel is soon to be in stores. And once the movie is released on DVD, there could be follow up anime movies (ie. Animatrix). The sky is the limit, seemingly.
As long as there are well thought out plots, twists and storylines, the Halo universe could last for 20 to 30 years, or more. And the longevity is very possible, due to the fact that Bungie is being smart about developing newer stories.
For example, with the graphic novel, they have teamed up with Marvel Comics. I highly doubt that they will have a shortage of writers and artists who will be inspired to concieve new ideas regarding Halo. With the movie, they have one of the best directors of this 21st century producing it. And Eric Nylund (author of "The Fall of Reach" and "First Strike") has done an amazing job so far. Hopefully he will write more books regarding Halo.
All in all, as long as Bungie and Microsoft continue to collaborate with other enthused professionals, we will be having a lot more Halo to get excited about.
