I feel I’ve experienced this myself and know of several people who have suffered this fate. You get pulled into a secluded location by your boss, maybe after work at a seedy bar or at dinner or at lunch and you are told that you are advancing in the company. However with this new position comes more responsibility and more work, a new title, but no increase in pay or benefits, but yes you also get to work more hours. This is called unwanted advancement and it’s a serious issue that must be addressed. I think it’s best to decline but often times a boss’s feelings maybe hurt or retaliation may occur when someone else is “promoted” and that person finds out you declined the position. Upper management may frown, but I say fight back and maybe you’ll get demoted and get less work and if you play your cards right your pay might remain the same.

Final Question: A band makes a hit and it’s a one hit wonder. 10 years later a new band covers that one hit wonder and it turns into another one hit wonder. What do you call this new band/song?
