A Gamer with a social dilemma.

I don't usually post on the weekends...but I've been thinking about this for quite a while and I could use some input from other people.

Being a gamer since I was 6 or 7....it has always carried that odd stygma that came with gaming. not many friends. At least not many non-gaming friends. Now being 26 that stygma still stands. I can find fellow gamers that are my age...but most of them play stuff I don't like..or do things in their non-gaming activities that I don't care for. Like drink excessively and party alot. I'm not in college anymore either...so theres no social structure I attend on a regular basis except my job. And they are all non-gamers.

I don't mind a good party or a drink occasionally. I'm just not that kind of guy. I don't need alcohol to have a good time.

What makes it ESPECIALLY hard is that I'm in that south...and thats about all everyone seems to do down here. Work, drink and have babies. Then Work and drink some more.

I've got very few friends...maybe 2 or 3. And over this past years I've lost a few. So now I am left with friends that either game (but don't play what I do), or they don't game and begrudge me my gaming time because they don't game. And they prefer to drink excessively at every social gathering.

Other than gaming, art and movies I'm a pretty boring person. I don't like to go to clubbing or drink excessively. I'm more happy with some pizza, soda and a good LAN. But almost no one around here (in the south) understands that.

I don't have alot of options it seems other than to move to a more "gaming oriented" area. But how do you find that? lol. Its not like a huge city would be like "Come Game Here!" or anything like that lol.

Basically its like this. Its hard for me to make friends because I'm a very non-social person. I don't enjoy the social atmospheres around my area other than LANs.

I need some suggestions for finding other gaming recluses like myself. lol.

Gatsu OUT!

I was in the same boat as you too, til I picked up snowboarding, met some really cool older people but none of them game really. Your comment about all they do in the south is work, drink and repeat is wrong...in the wrong order. Drink then work :D Thats why I dont have many friends outside of gaming as well. I just dont like waking up with a hangover every weekend.

I couldn't agree with you more on the Drinking. Although i used to do it all thow the Clubs, Bar Scene, whatever but now it seems its a been there done that kind of deal. Id rather just stay home and Game Online. And as for finding People in the same Boat as you and i. Well thats what this Site is for isnt it.Lol... But i see what your saying you cant find anyone in your General Area. Well join the Club Gat me too. Lol I think its a Age thing not a Location thing.

Off-line hobbies are the key. Find a semi-mainstream activity and jump in. Some guys bowl, some golf, I personally hunt down Timmies for prodgious application of the Wiffle Bat o' Justice. Seriously, find something that is moderately amusing and jump in. You'll find some folks are more like you than you think. Most of my friends are 10-15 years older than I am and we just ckick. You'll find it.

I'm in B'ham, AL and there is some of that here but it takes two to tango they say so you'll just have to get into those social atmospheres to make new friends. if it was easy, a caveman could do it :D Goose.

Shame my sister is married. I could set you up. lol According to her, there isn't much going on in Aiken. She is wanting to move out. I'm with the other guys. Just got to find or try some new hobbies and get out there. I took up flyfishing and hung out a little at the flyshop and met several new friends.

I agree w/Gat. I live in the south, and in the city I live in if you don't drink til you drop, there isnt a whole lot to do. Even weddings are judged on whether or not they had booze and if it is on the same day as a damn football game.

I would try to pick up some new hobbies...but nothing interests me. I don't like sports...bowling gets boring to me after a while...I'm not an out doors woodsy type. So no hiking, camping or rafting for me. lol. I'm just a comic & gaming geek.
