Mame Console update:

Gatsu

FINALLY! An update and some progress on this damn thing.

I got my new motherboard and RAM ordered last night from Newegg.com. So that should be in by Wednesday I believe.

Since Newegg has the measurements for the parts, I started drawing out a design for the case. Its gonna be all wood, but it'll be sanded and primed to look like plastic in the end. It'll be grey and have white logos on it.

its not a perfect layout, but thats ok. I'm gonna redraw it all in Illustrator, blow it up and print the blueprints out at work.

I'm glad that its finally moving forward somewhat. Once the MB and RAM come in I'll be configuring all of that over the week and then buy the wood for the case and work on it this weekend. So hopefully all the guts and the basic case design will be done and built for next week.

Then it'll be time to work on the controllers last.

Can't wait till this bitch is done. Its gonna rock.

Gatsu OUT!

How big are your fans? What processor are you going to have? Remember your power supply is an exhaust fan too. You might have to redo your airflow. Controller ports? What are you doing for that?

the fan for the power supply will be at the back of the console, so it's fine. Processor is a 2.4ghz Pentium 4. Dont have the fan dimensions on me at the moment. controller ports are gonna be PSOne controller slots.

Are you going to be using a USB converter then with the gamepads? Just a word of warning, USB is finicky. It will not always initialize controllers in the same order. So what use to be player 1 may end up player 2 the next time you turn the computer on. Unfortunately I don't think there is a good way to do this other than unplugging the devices, then plugging them in order after you restart the computer. You will have the same problem with usb gamepad. I think there is one gamepad that has been found where you can specify the controller's ID, Though I am not sure of which one. I assume you went with the psx pads because they are cheap. However, you know what would be cool and solve the ordering issue. Using xbox 360 controllers. I have been using the wireless adaptor and it is pretty cool. Though xbox 1 and wired xbox 360 controller can be had for cheap, might be another alternative. Though you'd just need to mount USB ports instead of hacking a psx to usb device.

Poonga - yep going with a USB convertor...thats my cheapest alternative...other than buying 4 2player ipacs at $30 a pop. I would go with the 360 wireless controllers...but I think that Im much more comfortable messing up a $6 controller versus a $40 controller. lol. I might go with the wireless controllers in a later upgrade. For now Im gonna use windows, but later Im gonna ask someone whose heavy into linux to help me develop some custom software for my box that will make it work more like a console instead of just a modified pc.

Oh, are you going to put arcade controls to it? I was assuming it being a "console" that you were just using controllers. In that case, yeah, use psx controllers to hack. Why would you need 4 ipacs? Are you running more than mame, like a psx emulator) (epsxe rocks, can play off original discs)

they only make ipacs that are 2-players...and I wanted to have a seperate controller for each player. Might run more than mame...not sure yet. Will have to see what Front-End Im gonna use first. I'm thinking about MameWah, but it only works with mame...not many other emulators.

Ultimarc does indeed make the IPAC in a 4 player mode. Look for the one that has 56 inputs. Its $65. The wiring is a bit of a pain, but this is the way to go if you want arcade controls.

Mamewha should work with other emulators. In fact, the feature list on the website says - practically unlimited multiple emulator support
