Shared on Mon, 05/04/2009 - 10:30This weekend I did some work on a 1984 Honda Aero 80 scooter I am selling. It is a two stroke scooter and as such after a few miles you can get a gunky build up of oil/soot in the muffler that degrades the performance of the scooter.
The approved method of removing this build up is to use a chemical solvent bath or to "cook" the muffler where you heat it up and the gunk burns up in the muffler and then you blow it out with compressed air. Just to be thorough I decided to do both.
I put the muffler in my parts washer and flushed the muffler with solution for about two hours, blew it out with compressed air and then put the thing on my BBQ grill. There was a really loud "backfire" at this point.
My seven year old son exclaimed "THAT WAS AWESOME!!!1!1!1" and the muffler continued to burn for about an hour after that.
It was a good weekend.
