I survived

We had a lay-off today. The suits wiped out half of our branch, but I managed to hang on a little longer. I'm afraid next time they'll just completely shut our plant down, but for now, at least, I still have a job. I watched a lot of good people walk out the door today. One woman's 29th anniversary was next week. She took it well, as she was thinking of retiring anyway, but there were some tears, and I can't really blame them; there just isn't anywhere for most of them to go.

I talked to buddy of mine this weekend that used to work with. He got laid off back in October and still ahsn't found anything. He has even made business cards and gone and talked to realtors and home builders, but he hasn't gotten a single bite. The poor bastard has 2 ex-wives and 4 or 5 kids.

I'm by no means on easy street, but I sure am grateful to still have a job and still have my head above water.

Yeah it's nasty out there. I live in a smaller town at the moment and the country's economy is looming overhead, it seems. Fortunately it doesn't hit small towns as hard but the effects are absolutely present. I have a job and house and most of my bills paid (if not always easily). I can never guarantee any of those things to be there tomorrow, but it at least feels like I'm "safe" or safer than many are, at least. Normally my life policy is to always be striving for improvement, not to be complacent, etc. Right now, with the shit having hit the fan, I keep my mouth shut most of the time and just be thankful I have a roof over my head and those I love.

It is so sad that people are losing their jobs, especially those that have been at them for so long. Even in the healthcare industry, we (nurses, desk clerks, etc.) were called to a meeting and informed of the kind of cuts we will have. No layoffs, but there is a hiring freeze, and we will be expected to take on more responsibilities as jobs get "combined". It really sucks, any way you look at it.
