It's Been Awhile / Baseball Cards

I know, who cares. Since the last post: Father-in-law is doing good. Pacemaker seems to be doing it's job. I got to spend a night in the hospital. That sucked. Christmas was good. Both boys are playing basketball. Seems like I have no free time.

Ok, here is the real reason I wanted to write this blog. I recently got back into one of my old hobbies. I have always like baseball. Growing up, it was always my favorite to play. I love going to baseball games. I love the sights, sounds and smells of the ballpark. Like some of you, I collected baseball cards growing up. Those cards are long gone now. About 6 years ago, I got my hands on a small collection of cards from one of my students. He didn't want them anymore and was going to throw them away. I told him to bring them to me. They were all common cards and not worth anything at all. Most people think old baseball cards means big bucks. This just isn't true. Most cards aren't worth anything. I got to talking to another teacher about the cards one day and he told me what he was doing with all his old cards. He was sending his cards back to the players and asking for them to be autographed. He had quite the collection. It turns out that a lot of the old players are happy to sign if you will just send a self addressed stamped envelope so they can send it back to you. I did this off an on for a few years and life got in the way. I recently pulled out the old cards and decided to see if I could get a few more autographs for the collection. I will post any of my successes here as they come in. In the meantime here is a return from recent Hall of Fame inductee Goose Gossage.

If anybody has any old cards they want to get rid of let me know. My little boys are getting into this big time. They will not allow us to get the mail without them. They want to be the one's to see if there are any "graphs" in the mail today.

Wow, what a great idea. I never even thought about that. I've got a collection with many thousands upon thousands of cards. Like you I totally understand that most are worth nothing on the market. However, even as a kid I never collected for the money, I loved putting sets together, getting all my favorite players in the different poses, etc. I was lucky enough in the 3rd grade to get a grocery bag(paper no less, heh) of topps cards from '59,'60,'61 and a few scattered '62's. Those included some Koufax, Maris, Matthews, Podres, McCovery and some others I don't recall now. Some of those are definitely worth a bit(though I didn't realized it until much later. I just thought they were cool when I was in 3rd grade::grin::) I'm wondering, how do you find addresses, how many cards do you send to a player - I mean I wouldn't want them to think I was trying to sell them off or something, what type of letter do you write them and what is the most expensive card you've sent off and have you had cards not returned? Would definitely appreciate your thoughts, feel free to pm if you want. Thanks - Raider30

I wish I had my old collection, when I joined the Army my mom thought that it was a stupid hobby and got rid of all my cards. I had a Nolan Ryan rookie among others. Good luck to you and your boys. PS. I am into hockey cards now sooooo.... you know if you find anything good....
