Nook vs Kindle

Seems like a couple of guys in 2old2shoot have Nooks.  I was interested in hearing what others think before I make a purchase.  Which is better and why?  My wife has borrowed an iPad for the summer from her school and has been reading on it and thinks she needs one.  I am trying to save some money and talk her into a Nook or Kindle.  So what do the people of 2o2p think about this subject?

I have a nook, but I really like it for the lending feature with other nook readers. As a person who has used both. I would say get a iPad if you have Netflix and your wife likes the internet and youtube videos and lite games. I would suggest a nook if her motive was just to read books when ever or where ever she wanted.

I am partial to my iPad but several of my friends have Kindles and love them. I've heard that Amazon has the best selection of books.

I have a kindle and that sonofabitch is awesome. In addition to buying books on Amazon, you can also download epubs and convert them for use on the kindle. Battery life is great. It lasts forever. No glare outside. Screen is easy to read. You can web browse on it if you so choose, but I dont. In a nutshell, I love mine. It beats lugging around 90 books when I can carry them on just my kindle. Or my phone. Or my desktop. Or my wifes phone.

The one thing I like about the Kindle is that your books aren't stuck in it, you can read your books on other devices too. They are adding library support too so you can walk into a library and check out books on your kindle or some such thing. One thing I like about the nook is that you can walk into the store and read for free for an hour. I'm not sure what the catalog is like but it seemed like kind of a cool idea. I also like that it's got apps coming to it as well so it'll open up more as a multi-function tablet where as the kindle is pretty much just an e-reader. One thing that bugs me about these things though is the cost of the ebooks. They're too expensive for what they are in my opinion. Unlike a paper book which has continual manufacturing and stocking costs, an ebook has a 1 time conversion cost with maybe some reformatting. But hte point is it's a one time cost. Why aren't these things like 2 bucks, not 10. I was looking at buying some new book series Game of Thrones or some such thing that's suppose to be comparable to Lord of the Rings. The paper back books were like 15 dollars for the entire series, they wanted 35 dollars for the ebook version. WTF?!

I love my kindle, easy to read and can store a ton of books (if you need). You can lend on a Kindle too, if you live in the states, and if the author/publisher has marked the book as lendable. You can also send a sample of the beginning of a book to your kindle. Not sure how much you get (I'll have to try that later). You can also get kindle apps for your iphone/ipad and computer, and can have all those devices synced up so you can pick up the book you are reading on any of them and not loose your place. Costs of ebooks can be high in my opinion. It seems $7.99 to $9.99 is the common price for ebooks that have current paperbacks out in print. You can get books much cheaper, but that's usually by more independent authors, and are probably a bit more niche. If you want to save money, go for the ad-supported kindle. It's like $114 bucks, and I believe the ads only are there when you turn the thing "off". (when you turn it off, it switches to a static image - so an ad in this case. That image stays there until you turn it back on. It doesn't use power showing an image, power is only used to switch pages/images). You won't have 3G on that kindle version, so you'll need wifi access (which is not a huge deal). I prefer reading on a kindle over an ipad/pc/other lit screens. The kindle (and nook, etc that use e-ink) is great to read. They look very close to how the pages look in a printed paperback. Easy to read anywhere but in the dark!

My wife has the Kindle and loves it. It's a great e-reader and the monochrome screen is very easy to read. Even in daylight (LCD's will have glare problems. Like your phone). It's also very thin and light. And the battery lasts forever. I'm sure you'd be very happy with it. And I'd pass on the ad supported one. Spend the extra 25 bucks and skip the adds. I'm also looking at an e-reader. But I'm looking at the new basic Nook that's been released. It's the same as the Kindle pretty much but the new one has a touch screen. It's battery is supposed to last longer than the kindle (2 months with Wifi turned off). And Barnes and Noble has a bigger selection, but I doubt you wouldn't find what you want with the kindle. I'm looking at either one of these. First off, I don't feel like dropping a shit ton of cash on the device. Hell, 139 is too much. And WTF do I need a tablet for? I have several laptops and PCs. And I have a Thunderbolt Droid phone. I just have no use for them. All I want is a reader.

I have to echo the Kindle statements. I love mine. The battery lasts forever. I've owned mine since December and I've only charged it 3 times! I had a huge list of books in .mobi format on my computer and they load right up and read great on the Kindle. It can also read .pdf's. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a Nook, but if you're just looking for something to read books on, the Kindle is the way to go.
