Going to try and learn to play a real guitar

So a while back my wife and I decided we were going to force our kids to play one musical instrument and one sport when they get older (up to them to decide which).  The problem is while both of us played sports and are physically active, neither of us can play any instruments.

It's no secret that I love playing Guitar Hero and Rockband, and both my sons like to watch me play.  Naturally this makes the guitar my choice of instrument for me to learn to play.  I went ahead and ordered a cheap Fender Starcaster starter pack.

Since I'm basically a total noob, I went looking for an instructional program for beginners.  I decided on eMedia's Guitar Method software.

I ordered all of this last week, but then yesterday I was browsing the forums here and saw a thread about Rocksmith from Ubisoft.  I have no idea how I overlooked this "game". I guess I've been too busy with the family and holidays.  Rocksmith seems to be exactly the type of thing that will help me stick with the practice.  This combined with the Guitar Method lessons should give me a nice solid foundation.

For those of you who (like myself) had never heard of Rocksmith, it is an instructional tool that allows you to plug any electric guitar into your 360 or PS3 using this cable:

It plays similar to Guitar Hero and Rockband, you play along with a song while watching colored notes cascade down the screen.  There's tons of videos on youtube.

Not only does it allow you to play the game, but there's an amp mode in the game that lets you play your guitar through your home theater (complete with lots of amp, cabinet and pedal settings to choose from).  Compared to the cost of a good amp, that alone is reason enough for me to get the game.

Now my ultimate goal is not to become the next Hendrix, I just want to re-learn how to read music and I'd know enough to expose my boys to it.  I can't force them to do something if I'm not willing to do it myself can I?

Anyway I'm pretty excited to get started learning and can't wait for the guitar to be delivered next week.  I already went through the first chapter of the Guitar Method and it is seems like a solid tool so far.

I have Elmore's Guitar method, but that focusses a lot more on theory than on actual playing. While it is nice to know why some things are the way they are with guitars, the initial step to actually getting your hand on the guitar is on a rather steep curve. Good luck with becoming an actual shredder!
