Shared on Fri, 02/20/2009 - 19:37This is a review I posted on my main blog, oddthoughtsandrants.blogspot.com. Since this is my first attempt at a blog on this site, I thought I'd just post this to test it out.
I have a XBOX360 and have been playing Battlefield: Bad Company since it first came out. I love this game. It gets so many things right. It rewards you for helping out teammates. If you are a support(medic) class and you throw a health pack to a teammate, you get a points boost. If you assist someone by repairing their vehicle, you also get points. If you assist someone killing an enemy, you get points for that. If you tag an enemy vehicle to allow rockets to home in on them, you get points. In most shooter-type games, you are only rewarded for killing the enemy. I love that this game gives rewards for doing other things that will help out the team. This game is still fun months after it came out, and I play it nearly every day. The biggest flaw is that it has some really stupid achievements. Achievements are basically points that go on your gaming profile and show how far you've progressed through all of the games you play. Most games have 1000 possible achievement points. In Madden, there are achievements for passing for a certain amount of yards, getting a long run, getting a certain amount of sacks, etc..
Most of Bad Company's are legitimately useful to helping your team win, but there are a couple that are ridiculous. One requires that you hide and let your team "spawn" off of your location 20 times, but you cannot die before all 20 have spawned. The problem is, in trying to get this, you are basically hiding for an entire round or more and not able to do anything to help your team. There's another one where you are supposed to jump out of the helicopter to your death. There is another one where you have to get various trophies to get the achievement, but some of the trophies are stupid. One requires you to run over 50 people in a boat, but there is no real reason for anybody to ever get in the water, so it is a useless thing to try to do. Also, there's one for running people over from a helicopter, which is pretty dumb to do, when you have guns and missiles available on the chopper. I've tried to do it just to see if it is possible, and all it's done is caused my chopper to get damaged and the person who I tried to run over doesn't take any damage. It's not the only game that's done this, but since I like it so much, it really irks me moreso than it would on a crappy game.
