At Least I Still Have A Job

It's been one of those weeks and it's only Tuesday.  My daughter was throwing up all yesterday so I went home early.  I got behind at work and am trying to play catch-up today.  As I am waiting on a program to finish running, I get an email from our corporate HQ.  Usually these are fluff and of no great consequence.  Oh, how I wish this one was one of them.

Because of the great shape of the economy and since we've already had three rounds of layoffs and they really can't get rid of anybody else, my company has decided to force those of us remaining to take a pay cut.  Nevermind the fact that we are all doing more work than ever trying to keep things running and taking things over from the ones that were let go.  Not only that, we also get to see our benefits shaved off.  No more 401K matching, tuition reimbursements, merit increases or bonuses of any kind.  They claim this is temporary, but only a fool would really expect them to ever raise our salaries back to normal.

That said, it could be worse.  I have a job, and I've survived the layoffs once again.  It isn't the best situation, but as with anything, it could always get worse.  I love my job and have a great boss, which is probably the number one reason I've remained here for so long.  I just have to make a point to keep my head up and be mindful of my blessings.

I’m in the same boat as you, being happy to be one of the remaining employees who still has a job. But on a brighter note, my fortune cookie for today says “You will be singled out for promotion”. I wonder how much less pay that will bring?

That sucks. But ya it's better then losing the job completely. Hang in there.

I foresee that once things get better (and they will) a ton of employees are going to paly musical chairs.

Yes, many of them are already talking about it. Our state has fared pretty well, as it is generally thought of as being "recession proof" so some people have options. I work with some pretty specific sets of software, so my options are fairly limited, unless I want to relocate. That's not a palatable option, as my son lives here and I don't want to be just a summer dad for him.
