Shared on Wed, 03/04/2009 - 10:20Since I am a politics junkie I watch the news, read blogs, and generally obsess over things that I can't control, especially the government. Lately I have been seeing a lot of stories about the legalization of gay marriage and the repeal of DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell).
I am a little fascinated by the whole anti-gay thing. No, I am not gay so fuck you for thinking that. I do however have gay family members, gay friends, and gay co-workers - both men and women. I will admit that the lesbians at work look nothing like the hot chicks I see in porn which is a huge disappointment. Damn you Hollywood! Damn you all to Hell!
Anyway, back to topic. I have never understood the opposition to gay marriage. What difference does it make? My parents told me it cheapens their marriage but can't say how. Yes, it is 'icky' and yes it is 'weird' but so what? Why does 'icky'=illegal? Will it change anything? I don't think so. My buddy told me that it will normalize something that is not normal. He contends that we will have to start telling children that it is ok to be gay. Call me crazy but in my opinion, it is ok to be gay. If my son tells me he prefers nuts to cherries, sure it will break my heart, but what can I do? I would much rather him be with one person in a committed relationship then going nut to butt with a different person every night.
Then there is DADT. Those of us who have been in the military know that there are tons of gay people serving right now. From the Mess Hall to the Officers Quarters you will find gay people who serve our country. Some of them are open about it to a close few, sometimes you end up discovering it by accident when you notice the guy showering next to you is staring at your junk a little too long. Either way, they are out there. We can't ignore them. Just let them serve. I know the military is about toughness and strength, so I invite you to take a stroll down Fort Lauderdale beach on Gay Pride Week. Some of those guys are built like fuckin' tanks. Sure their version of CQC (Close Quarters Combat) is a little different than mine. My version does not involve leather chaps and back rubs - but to each his own. Give them a gun, tell them that bin Laden is trying to ban Queer Eye and make Broadway Musicals illegal... problem solved.
