I'm not sure how many on this site have tried the Wii but I was able to play on it this weekend. I wasn't really expecting to much from the system but I had a BLAST!
To describe the setup, we were playing at a hardcore gamers' place. I mean this guy has every friggin system under the sun. We were playing on a 112" screen via an HD projector. He has an excellent sound system even though Wii Tennis didn't need much thump.
His apartment was a little too small for the projector but 4 player Wii Tennis was possible. I sat with a slice of pizza, while he explained the options and creating your Mii(player profile).
We started off with Wii Tennis. To make your character swing is easy, but the difficulty comes with timing your swing. Pulling off fast serves was awesome and if you were slow to swing then you got / gave an easy score. I played a few games when another co-worker arrived. He jumped right in and was able to pick up and play Wii tennis. It was his first time with the system so I can see why the system is selling well. I'm sure some of the other games may have a more complicated control scheme but Wii Tennis was easy to pick up & play.
I believe I won the match and we moved onto Bowling. Talk about a game you can have friends come over, slam some brews and play. The sensitivity concerning your wrist position blew me away. The slightest twist of the wrist and your ball is spinning of its original course. After three matches, I was able to bowl a 159 (real life number is less). So I suck for real and in the gaming relm.
Wii Golf was next and its been a while since I played but this was fun too. This is another game that has easy controls but you have to pay attention to the details (wind and swing power). We played on beginner so we only played three holes 4 times!
I love how the screen will display "You may want to take a break" after each game. This was so true because I was starting to build up a sweat.
With that said, I had another pizza and we played some Wii Play. The games that stood out for me were Pool, a Duck hunt type game and Tank.
The Pool game was simple to learn and the options you have concerning English and power was pretty kewl. I wish it had a normal 8-ball setup, but its version of 9 ball was enough to keep us busy. It took us some time to clear the table the first time.
Since we had been up and moving for close to an 1 hr & 1/2 , the Duck hunt game was relaxing in a sitting on your ass kind of way.
Then came the brain cramps. We were shown how to play the Tank game but my brain had a hard time pointing and moving that Fucking tank at the same time. I tried switching the nunchuck to the other hand but I was not picking up the controls. I gave up after one round. We hit the other mini games on Wii Play but they didn't really stand out. Ok, maybe that bubble matching game was a bit fun. Did I just say I liked playing a game where you match a figure outline with the corresponding bubble? LOL
Finally a fourth person arrived and it was time to get the Wii Tennis on! My team lost all 6 matches but we were so close to winning. I thought I would be playing for 2 1/2 hrs but ended up playing for over 3 1/2 hrs. This is definitely a system I will have by Xmas 07.
