2 games under my arm

Long time no blog. I have a couple of games under my belt that I would like to talk about since my last blog. The first one is Assassin’s Creed 2. Boy was that game great. They really did improve upon the original. But the best part of AC2 was the endings. Whether you revealed the truth or not this was an middle aged adults dream!             Many of you have probably heard of the great conspiracy theories of our time. For instance, the countries of the world are not ruled by present government, rather they are ruled by shadow governments that are mainly headed up by big business or powerful economic figures. All of this comes under question when you play AC2 and I think they wrapped up all of these crazy theories quite nicely. I found it a blast to look at the ending and contemplate. The creators of AC2 made this game for the 30 and up crowd, I’m sure of it! Because only that age group can truly appreciate the ending of that game. What kid believes the Illuminati created all of this strife to keep the common man down?!?! I really appreciate the gritty writing of AC2 and I certainly am looking forward to AC3 not so much for the game play but more for the story. I really wish I was able to get more of my thoughts down as I finished this game because I had some much stuff swimming through my head by the end of it. Again this is why I appreciate a site like this because I sound like an idiot when I bring this up at work.

For anyone who has not played AC2 I highly, highly recommend it. The other cool thing about the series is that it is more sandbox than you think it is. Many complained that it was too easy to earn the money in the game. I argue that they made the money system that way for those that were not willing to put in the hours to this game and still enjoy the majority of the game. Same with the Stealth kills. You could easily go into this game with just razor sharp reflexes and still achieve the goal. But for those that got into the lore you could play the game a completely different way and go for the stealth kills. This might have made the game a little misdirected but I think they left the game open for you to direct it. In other words, this game is truly what you make of it. Even the first AC was like this. You could go into it mashing buttons and prevail but you could also hold yourself to a higher standard and make the game as hard or as easy as you wish.

After AC2 I started back on some of the RPGs I had saved up. The first of them is Fallout 3. I know this game got rave reviews and is considered a top notch game but for some reason I could not get that much into it. In fact, I’m still in it trying to love what everybody else loves but I just can’t. I’m sure like many of you old farts out there you are used to the RPG formula. That formula breaks down into start off poor, and helpless, get weapons and level up, get into story, get betrayed, find party members, level up some more and eventually get on the main story and just wipe them out.   You would awe at your character progression. At the beginning of the classic games a rat would give you a run for the money but by the end of the game you would just glance at the same rat and it would explode in the face of your awesome might. I am at level 14 in Fallout 3 and I do not feel that way at all. I’m still struggling to etch out my existence in this world. Some may say that that is the way Fallout is supposed to be but I like to feel like my level up experience is worth a little bit more than it does in Fallout. In fact it is one of the reasons us old schoolers even do the side quests. I could give a shit about the kids in Camp B. I saved their punk butts so that I could own the level 3 bosses. But since everything in the world leveled up with me the side quests were there for story. And while the story was good it still never left me feeling satisfied to have done them. I guess I’m spoiled on some of the classic games of our time. Speaking of classic games, one that does fall into this fold is Dragon’s Age. I really enjoy this game and while I’m still relatively new on the adventure it still feels familiar but new at the same time. The only thing I don’t like about this game is the dialogue. I got spoiled on Mass Effect where when I spoke, I spoke.  If interrupted, I suffered some consequence. Mass effect is now the standard in which all dialog should follow in my book. I can’t wait to play Mass Effect 2. Next blog…my love/hate relationship with Halo.

Oh I understand the limitations because of Dragon's Age design. Don't get me wrong. I love the way designers are doing new things with RPG's. But I just didn't get in Fallout 3 despite it's rave reviews. I can't wait to play ME2 though. Are you an RPG player TE?

Sounds as if, like me, you were raised on the classic RPG's like the original Final Fantasy and such. Fallout 3, like Oblivion is very different from JRPG's in that there's no party gathering and no grinding for levels. I believe this is what brought a lot of non-RPGer's into the fold and why some old school RPG fans like it a little less. Dragon Age is one of my favorite games and while a little annoyed that your main character doesn't speak, the reason behind it makes sense. Unlike Mass Effect, it's not just a choice of male or female, it's a choice of any of 6 origin stories (plus a 7th if you start a new Awakenings game). It's just not feasible to do all that voice work. But you're right, Mass Effect and ME2 are the top of the line when it comes to voice acting. ME2 plays a bit different than ME1, but it's still a great game that I'm sure you'll enjoy.
