Is my "friend" a racist?

There was a guy I grew up with that I kind of lost contact with, but we recently reconnected on Facebook.  He posts a lot of political opinion and links on his page.  A lot of it has to do with illegal immigration and the like.  When Barak Obama was elected Preseident, he made some comment to the effect of, "I thought we were supposed to see past color, why is everyone making a big deal that he is black?"  I responded with something to the effect of, "You seriously can't see the historical significance of this event?"

He also posted something like, "Obama's policies suck, but everyone is going to do what he says because he is black."  Look, I am no fan of Obama's policies, but these thoughts never crossed my mind.  He just seems awfully obsessed with race.  A while ago he posted a note where he was answering questions about himself and one of the things he said was, "I am proud to be a white American, and that does not make me a racist."

I told him that I thought it kind of did.  I asked him about his obsession with it and he claimed he didn't have one.  I asked him if he would say that to a black person, but he never responded.

Am I reading in to this too much?  The dude seems like a total racist to me and I just might have to unconnect with him on Facebook.

he's a racist. "I am proud to be a white American" is racist, elitist and xenophobic. I think it's actually the motto of the clan.

I would hope people of any culture feel pride in all the best aspects of it and can comfortably express that. That said, IMHO your friend's declaration when coupled with the other comments in context does read as though he has some personal problems at the very least....and race appears to be part of it. Hope it works out positively for both of you.

I have heard black people say repeatedly they are proud to be an african american or even black american, does it make them racist?

I've gotta go with Rogue on this one. Any other race can say "I'm proud to be ______".....and they are ok. The second a white guy stands up and says he's proud to be white...RACIST...RACIST. Not cool. I'm proud to be what I am. That does not make me racist or elitist or xenophobic. Just makes me proud of my heritage.

"White" isn't a heritage. "Southern" could be- but "white" is only a heritage if you think that all white people have a homogenous culture. The only people that think that exclude the Jews and the mud people. Your Facebook friend is a racist.

Ok we live in a country where people are allowed to be openly gay, transvestites, bisexual and everything else they want to be, more power to them. So what if this guy is racist isn't it his right to have his own opinions even if you think they are wrong? Also people always seem to forget that racism goes both ways, not just white hating x.

I agree that racism goes both ways. I didn't always live in the best neighborhoods growing up and was beaten up a couple times just because I was white. ...and yes Buzz, he has a right to be racist, but I don't feel like associating with such close-minded people no matter what race is perpetuating the attitude.

I'm with Rogue and Gatsu on this one. Even if your friend isn't racist and you still feel uncomfortable, then you still should'n't have to feel bad about unconnecting with him. Peace of mind is good my friend. =)
