Some thoughts on The Witcher

If you dig games like Dragon Age Origins or Diablo then you might want to check out The Witcher. Developed by Polish studio CD Projekt and published by Atari The Witcher follows monster hunter for hire Geralt of Rivia who after being killed by a mob during a slaughter of non humans magically returns to life with a bad case of amnesia. This leads our hero on a quest to both regain his lost memories while also tracking a group of magicians who stole a powerful alchemic formula.

The gameplay is similar to Dragon Age on the pc. With both over the shoulder and isometric camera angles and left click to kill real time rpg gameplay combined with a healthy amount of loot. What sets the game apart is the ability to use the parts of dead monsters and plant life to create alchemic potions which will grant you special powers while you fight. Granted it may not seem on the up and up to call vodka mixed with some funny flowers you found in the woods a "magic potion that aids endurance" but you can create all manners of potions, poisons, and bombs to aid you on your quest.

While the gameplay and story is solid and fun there are a few blemishes that I'd like to point out.  For starters they took the sex scenes from Mass Effect and amplified it by a thousand in this game with female npc's jumping your bones every half hour. While this might not seem like a bad thing there really isn't any draw or emotional connection to the horde of women who seem willing to fuck you the second you save them and you even get pornographic collectible cards of the women you sleep with. So ultimately all of the female characters in this game are pathetic weaklings that you have to collect the cards from like some kind of big titted Pikachu.
Also there is a annoying system where you have to learn about the animals and plants you collect before you can loot them. You do this by basically buying books and reading them but it seems dumb to me that you are incapable of picking a flower unless you read a book about that flower first.

All and all though the game is interesting and fun, and at 20 dollars on steam more than worth a purchase.
