Attention Weapons Experts (Weapons in Games: Realistic or no?)

Maybe it's cause I actually had to ask a coworker to confirm the difference between a semi automatic and  single shot action on a had gun.. you know. Just in case my boss asked me in our bi-lat today, but I noticed that the free DLC for Splinter Cell is a supressed shotgun. To that I say... "REally? A suppressor is magically going to make my shottie silent? I'd like mythbusters to check this one out please."

But why ask mythbusters, when I can ask 2old2play?

Is this realsitic? AND how do you find the realism in gaming weapons? Let's assume that my avatar in CoD is wearing body armour (or whatever soldiers wear...) is it likely that a guy can take "X" shots before dying. To me it seems like they take a lot. But I also don't play on hard.

So is there any technical aspect of a game that drives you crazy. And please! Tell me! Will putting a suppressor on a shottie make it quiet? Quiet enough to be stealthy? (It's a SPAS-something or other)

Yes they make cans for shotguns. Yes they reduce flash and sound. No they're not as quiet as they seem on TV, video games or movies. There useful for opening locked doors indoors without deafening yourself. A lot of factors are involved in a suppressor function efficiently. Videogames take a lot of creative license when it comes to firearms and the resulting violence. Want to know more? Take a tactical carbine class.

The best way to silence a shotgun I have found is to firmly press the end of the barrel into the open end of a frozen turkey.

As far as body armor, that comes in different classes and each class provides a little more protection at the cost of additional weight and loss of flexibility. You can read a good write up here: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/body-armor1.htm As far as realism is concerned, most games do not strive for that. The Rainbow Six series is probably the most realistic in determining where you were hit and what the impact was on you. If you want more, come on into site chat most days and people there will glad answer any questions you may have.

If you have netflix start watching Future Weapons. its under the TV shows and streams instantly. they have one on a type of body armor that can take on the full force detonation of a grenade... as for a silenced Spas-12...the sound made from the action slamming back on that is enough to make quite a racket...but yeah they can be silenced.

I have used some the weapons in COD4 and MW2 such as the M16, M60, M249 and M9 (was in the Army) and there is way more recoil. Also the fact the you can hear your surroundings, even foot steps, right after firing is unrealistic.

I love the fact that in MW2 your plactic riot shield protects you from point blank frontal grenade blasts, but if you get shot in the toe or but with a 9mm pistol you die instantly... super realistic!

Yes you can hang a can on a shotgun but it will still make a lot of noise. No suppressor makes the "pffft" sound hat video games and movies would make you think it does. On a breaching shotgun, ( the one you see SWAT guys use to blow off door hinges,) the muzzle attachment is more for standoff than noise suppression. Body armor in the real world isn't intended as a bullet sponge. It's for when you forget to duck or take cover. Level 4 with ceramic plates can stop some rifle ammo such as AK-47 (7.62x39mm) but then again, maybe the manufacturer was having a bad day the day your armor was made.
