Big Purchase: Any suggestions?

Well, it's happened. I'm officially old. Step 1 was when I clicked on a button that said "Join the old guys?" and Step 2 was earlier last week when I said to my husband. "Hunny, what do you think about getting a mini-van?". Yep, after weeks of trying to fit a load of groceries into the same trunk as a stroller and not succeeding, we are looking into getting a new car.

I've never bought a car before. I don't check my oil, I can't change a tire, I don't know anything about horsepower, engine size or torque. OK I know what torque is, only because I did physics in university, but I digress. I am totally lost. I've looked through LemonAid and Consumer Reports Car guide, but there is just a lot to take in. AND I haven't even really looked at the price of each car!

Any suggestions? I am thinking of either a mini-van or a small SUV. Anything I should stay away from?

As for the 50 book challenge. Um... Well I've read LemonAid and Consumer Reports Car Guide! That counts!

And just an update on the wee girl: she is doing AWESOME! She's huge, healthy and teething so is cranky all the time. But I love it.

And while all of you are promoting the Odyssey, I have had 4 Dodge Caravans, my wife just got her own, my daughter and her family have one, and my son and his family have one. We love them!

Minivans rock. And the king of all minivans is the Honda Odyssey. When I married my wife, one of the conditions of marriage was that I would never force her to drive a minivan. 6 years and 1 kid later, she got tired of leaning far down to put the kid in the car seat and asked me to get her one. She's been driving an Odyssey for 8 months and loves it.

"I've never bought a car before" That scares me more than what choice you make. Please research with your husband prices and options ( lease, car loans, etc.) before you step on the lot. Check out www.edmunds.com for info, and Saturn has a no haggle policy I think.

Oh, and Goodnight Moon, LemonAid, and CU's car buyers guide don't count. Have you read the Glass Castle?

No. I haven't read glass Castle. Who's it by? Yup: my husband and I are doing a TON of research before we step foot on the lot: I am doing the lions share so far. We both are a bit clueless with cars, but I'm learning!

Honda Odyssey is the best. I couldn't live without mine. I use to hate the thought of driving one. Edmunds.com is the price to go by. Forget the Blue Book crap. Don't pay a dime more than Edmunds says. I have driven several different minivans that I had borrowed or rented for one reason or another. Never liked any of them. Honda is the one to get.

My wife and I have a 04 Toyota Sienna and we love it. Honda Odyssey is a great one also. We were splitting hairs between Honda and Toyota when we purchased. They cost a little more but its worth it.

I have to concur with drew and tri, the Odyssey is the best on out there in all facets and it has a 5 star crash rating for every passenger, just hope you never have to test that out. When I bought it was a toss up between the Honda Pilot SUV and the Odyssey. I went with the Pilot though because it has 4 wheel drive which with Chicago winters is essential when living in the burbs.
