Erica: the Gamer!

Eria can now play videogames.  You know, we played when we were... 8ish 10ish... we are going to see a crop of kids who have been gaming since they were in diapers. My man let Erica play a little ipod game: you touch the screen and fling penguins. Then you fling penguins at polar bears.  She's good.  Okay no: actually she really sucks...  she will have to do better if she wants to be a pro. (for the newbs: Erica is 2)

But yeah: this got me thinking of how ingrained technology will be in her life. She loves youtube. She sort of talks on the phone. She plays with Daddy's ipod. She knows how to ask for something that we PVR'd to fast forward.

I had my own record player at about 8.

With all this technology, it's difficult to get them to just play with "stuff". Here's a hat and a stuffed animal: go play make believe type of playing.  She did enjoy it when I took out money form her piggy bank and she got to put it back in. That was good times for a half hour. Note to self: stop giving the 2 year old toonies: save that for coffee.

The only "technology" I was exposed to at that age was a TV and a radio and possibly a camera. Although I grew up in Poland and those were expensive so I wasn't allowed to touch until my parents were sure I had developed good hand/eye coordination with minimal fumbling skills. My parents got me a casette player/recorder I think when I was 8. (That same year dad went and bought a Commodore 64) My boss's daughter is 4 or 5 and his son is 3. They both play video games, use a Macbook to play on the internet (barbie.com etc.), or take pics of themselves using Photo Booth, they know how use cell phones etc... It's crazy how much things have changed.

Things have changed a lot since we were young. My son is 2.5 and he can play baseball on Wii Sports. He needs a bit of help as he doesn't quite understand what he is supposed to do but he can swing when you tell him and throw as well. I am worried about my TV though.....

Many of the timmies we play against have been gaming since they were in diapers. My daughter is 19 and when she was 2, she used to sit on my lap and play DOOM. Pretty soon she graduated to "Little Critter" and other little kid PC games. As for technology, she's been used to a DVR for almost 10 years now and has never known a time where she didn't have broadband.

I introduced both of my gsons to video games at about 3 years of age. When the younger one was 4, they got a Wii for Christmas and he became a pro bowler very quickly. And he's a lefty! Me? I had a transistor radio. Don't know what that is?? lol
