Little Non-Drama for the Crew (Playing a New Gaming Genre)

Halo sucks and anyone who plays it is stupid. No? Too much Drama? okay... lemme try again.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is coming out in less than a week, and I am *very* excited. I mentioned in a previous blog that I regulate my gaming budget and this year I knew what I am going to buy from the get-go. Splinter Cell is the last game I will buy this year... and it's only April. Here's the thing.

I don't play stealth action shooter games. This will be my first.

So why would a non action gamer choose, of ALL the games out there a stealth action game. Especially when one consideres my very tight gaming budget? The previews. Seeing new an innovative gameplay (mark and execute, last known position, etc.) and innovation in storytelling (a HUD doesn't tell you where baddies are, it's done in a cutscene, your mission objectives are projected on walls etc). These have my interest piqued. I like to try new things and new genres if the game seems like a genre breaking game.

God of War was a game like that. Everywhere I saw reviews, I saw "OMG! God of War!! Even if you hate action games, it's one of the best in history. The artistry is amazing and the gameplay mindblowing!" So.. this fledgling gamer girl, who maybe a year or two previously would only play turn based RPGs... cause you know... controls are confusing,  decided to pick up and play God of War... the mother (daddy?) of all action games. The benchmark by which action games are judged to this day.

I am hoping Splinter Cell is going to be that same God of War experience. A new genre, to open up my gaming horizon.

Has there been a game that made you want to try out a new genre? Is there one out there now and what's stopping you? Is there a genre that you want to try, but that genre busting game just hasn't been made?

I got the impression that this one was supposed to be a bit less stealth than previous games. At least you can choose if you want to be stealth or action. That thought made me want to give it a try. Although not right away as my budget won't allow for another game right now. You guys let me know what you think about it and maybe I'll get it later. I won't be getting anything new until the fall most likely. Oh and Jay Cat you know I love you but get off my Halo please... :) I consider myself very intelligent.

i LOVE the stealth action games. it all started for me with metal gear solid on the psone. i liked the idea of choosing to kill, knock out or sneak by. splinter cell did a bit of a better job at the sneaking part, although you seemed to have to take out people more often the in MGS. and then i played hitman. with hitman you had a choice, not only to sneak, but to take the clothes of downed foes and walk in through the front door. or you could just run in guns blazing. have patience with the stealth genre. once you get how to play them, they are pretty addicting. the metal gear games actually reward you if you only knock out foes. hitman gives you a rating system to go by for bodies found, times spotted and things like that. enjoy the game.

I was never a splinter cell fan, or a fan of that genre in general. But i played the previous splinter cell game and had a lot of fun with it. They had 'refocused' to make it more action oriented and it was decent. I'm not planning on buying the new one though. It's been rewritten and delayed and rewritten so many times i just think it's going to be a clusterfuck of a title. Maybe my assumption will be incorrect but a game that's had more work than a hollywood actress, i just have a lot of doubts. Give us a review after you sink your teeth into it a bit.

God of War 3 is good, but over rated... 1 is still the best one, and 3 is just a re-hash of what we played in the last 3 GoW games. Ill be getting SC:C... can't wait for it. Love the other SC games on Xbox and I freaking loved the demo I am regulating my budget for a while. Trying to save money for a few reasons. I want a bigger TV (60-62 inch) and might update my PC. Its fast now but... well you know how that goes... plus I want to buy the next Rock Band game.

For me the game that changed everything was.... Halo:Combat Evolved. I know what you're thinking, but trust me on this one. I had fallen off the console gaming scene and hadn't touched one in 7-8 years. I dabbled with a friend's Dreamcast and the AWESOME Soul Caliber. That had been my extent of console gaming since my (let's be honest here - parent's checkbook back then) was burned by the Sega machine. I hadn't touched a console since SegaCD. Being a mac family my options were limited, but luckily there was a little known company called Blizzard. I wasted so many hours in Diablo1 through LoD and Warcraft 3 I adn't even noticed anything going on around me. Playstations 1 and 2 were lost to me. In comes an invite from some friends to play a game called Halo. Happened around november 2002. I was thrown in to the mix, guys had months of playtime on me. A controller was handed to me, inverted controls. The learning curve was steep. Soon I was learning all the ropes. I consider myself lucky. We had a group of guys who would gather once a month to the tune of all-day saturday gaming binges for literally 12 hours. The normal attendance was 12+ with always four xboxes. My soon to be wife gave me a box and halo for my birthday and it was all down hill from there. I could go into more details, but I think many people have the same love affair with the space marines of Halo fighting an unbeatable force and so on. Eight years and 5 Halos later I still love the FPS. That is the genre Halo introduced me to. I had not once played one before. For me it had been fighters, point and clickers (Diablo) and a little RTS. I didn't know I was a gamer before Halo, but my love for the story, its characters and lets face it merchandise bought outside the games prove it to me.

I too have a game budget. It's called my wife's tolerance level. I have one game craving and many people know it's Halo. As long as I stick to that game and only a few sessions a week, I'm in the green. If the time between Halo games were any greater I would consider something else. Like you, I would be very choosy about what I bought. There are so many demos out there I should be able to make a decent choice from that.

I played a bunch of Splinter Cell: Conviction at PAX East. I'm not a stealth games guy, but I loved it...
