Music Sellouts!

Okay, new MR for Mulchie.  What is your MR of Music Sellouts?

By definition, a sellout has to have had either implied or explicit "cred" of some sort. For instance, Britney Spears never had musical integrity in the first place so the fact that she was a spokesperson for Pespi doesn't mean that she's a sellout, it means that she is doing her job.  So we are talking about either selling products, or selling out your musical integrity.  And you had to have some integrity to begin with.

Now, I will admit, I am not a music person.  I like music, but I am not as well versed as some out there, so I would love to see lots and lots of opinion on this one.

#1. Avril Lavigne. "I'm a Punk" she says. or rather her stylist says.  She's as punk as I am.  Her latest videos have obscene product placement, she's with Ford modelling, yet she tries to play herself off as a rocker.  Yeah-huh, sure you are.  She's Britney Spears, but her "people" just gave her a different look.  At least Brit admits what she is : pop through and through.

#2. Jewel. She used to be a folk godess. Then she made... a Dance CD?! Shook her ass for $$. booooo...

#3. Gwen Steffani.  No Doubt was a ska band, kinda alternative. She does great solo work, but is much more poppy.  Why does she get a mention?  for this lyric: "You like the way I work, You like the way that L.A.M.B. is written on my shirt." That's right. A plug for her own designs on her own music. Plus she is all over HP ads as well.

#4. I say Elvis: all those movies when he got big... graceland etc.  Turned from a bad boy/sex  symbol rock n roller (when rock n roll was the devils music) into.... fat Elvis where you can buy anything cheap and tacky with his name on it. I know some of that is his estate, but I am sure some of the selling out was due to the King himself.  Sean says Jon Bonjovi. Jon Bon (as I call him) is now a model for cologne, he used to be a "heavy metal" band.  This is where we deaprt. Although I had the biggest crush on Jon Bon, I am not sure how much he (and his band) was considered heavy metal or rock... Did they ever have cred AT THE TIME?  I don't know

(Dis)honorable mention? Nickleback for hte song "RockStar" which was released at the same time as a TV show called... Rock Star.  I mean c'mon. You just know the band was like Pleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease just hoping that theri song was going to be featured on the show.

So what do you guys think? I would really really love to hear other ideas!

Actually, if somone was gonig to give me a big contract...I would "sell out". Cause no record label is going to give a crap about you unless you are selling...So get the money when you can.. But that is just my opinion.. :)

#1 Red hot chili peppers: what happened to their trademark sound? #2 Metallica :any album After( and justice for all) I started sleeping through the songs #3 Incubus : wtf happened to they way they were? #4The Misfits : love the punk sound, but Jerry Only is the lone original member. good bassist, bad singer. much prefer the two albums with Michael Graves on vocals ( famous monsters & American psycho) (dis)honorable mention : Johnny Cash- love his music just don't want his kids selling his songs for commercials

Staind. They used to be a metal band until Outside became a massive hit. I may be underinformed, but I haven't heard a Staind song since Outside, that doesn't sound like Outside recycled.

@ixtab - Good call on Red Hot Chili Peppers. I can't stand any of their recent singles from the last few years.

ixtab - On Metallica, there's a difference between selling out and you not liking the music. The 90s Metallica wasn't my favorite either, but Metallica has always been about doing their own thing and not following the masses. You are dead on with the Misfits though. They haven't made a good album since Danzig left. The biggests sellouts of all time have to be The Rolling Stones.

no i'm talking about Metallica's shift from hardcore metal to the washed out psuedo soft rock crap that they released. the so called s&m albums come to mind. In regards to the misfits in my opinion they have had two good albums since danzig left, just not with jerry Only singing but thats just my opinion

Avril Lavigne - was originally a country star until she was remade into punk...she has never been anything but a sell-out...and a class-A twat.
