I got my first comic book today. She-Hulk 1-6 (it's a trade paperback). Very funny, and has some issues that speak to me. Basically there is Jen Walters: mild mannered lawyer and her alter ego: She hulk: 7 ft tall amazon type goddess: sexy powerful bold. Everything Jen isn't. Basically Jen has to work at a major law firm, doing super-law... so all the court cases involving super heroes and villians (think Boston Legal meets Marvel Ultimate Alliance). Very good stuff.
What I find interesting is the issues that Jen has with her sexuality. As She-Hulk she is THE party girl: frequently finds herself in bed with underwear models, different party every night... but the people around her would still rather be with "plain old Jen." The party girl, super sexed, hyper "pop-feminine" (I made that term up: think Paris Hilton, and Pamela Anderson: the girls that try WAY too hard to be sexy all the time, the ones that show only one part of their being: the one without the panties) while fun to be with, has no substence.
It's something that all women have to deal with at one point in our lives. Being sexy, yes, will get you things. Power over men and women, and attention. Hell, I LOVE attention, and I do use my hottieness to sometimes get people to notice me. People like sexy. It's fun being sexy. But it won't get you respect. And it won't bring you wisdom, and it won't bring insight. It is only one part of your being, not the whole package. And there is a different type of power in using your whole person to get what you want. You can't be the best you unless you use every gift you have.
So: back to my nerdiness. Jen is learning (slowly) that pop-feminine, while is ego boosting, is shallow. Hopefully there will be a merging of the two personaliites: Jen will take the best part of the She-Hulk (the confidence, the boldness, and sure: the sexy) and blend them with Jen who is intelligent kind and caring. And vice versa
and yes: I do admit it: It's AWFULLY nice to walk into the comic book shop knowing that I am the HOTTEST thing to walk through...
