So Long and Thanks for all the Fish...

Well,

I guess this says it all:

So there I was, having contractions on my wedding anniversary arguing with a community member about her (granted) work-in-progress article. The hook behind the potential post was “all things crappy in gaming can be blamed on mothers and women” with, of course, the implied “not cool women like US.”

And that’s when it hit me. If this community was a guy, I would have dumped his ass long ago. Why the hell was I sticking around?

It wasn’t the article. Yes, this article did make me see red. As a woman and mother, I’m sick of being blamed for everything shitty. But this is old hat. Seen it many times.

But what hurt most was that I knew that in the hands of this excellent writer, this was going to get page views, and lots of them. And that the community site for which this was written would all stand up and cheer this article on. Once again I would be a lone voice – Hey do we really need to throw women under a bus to make this point? And once again, only to be shot down as a hysterical loser.

Or that’s what the cynical part of me was saying. The cynical bitter part.

I don’t like cynical and bitter me. I like the old me, the fun-loving, easy-going, genuine me.  The person I was before I started to get mad at the sexism on the community site. And there is a lot. Just this week I asked for a second opinion of an Admin regarding a rape scene in someone’s wallpaper.

Asking for a second opinion on a rape scene… WTF? I have been there for over three and a half years. I am a mod on that site, I used to write for the front page. I have done interviews representing the site. Yet, when it came to something as blatant as pictures of young anime girls screaming with their clothes ripped off, I was asking for a second opinion as to whether or not this violated the TOS. Why? What made me so gun shy? Why was I not doing my job?

Cause I want to be liked. Women are socialized from such a young age to be nice. To not rock the boat. To put up and shut up.
“Ha ha, boys will be boys. I guess I have to join them since I can’t change their minds.” Well. that doesn’t really work well with me. I don’t sit quietly. I get mad, and I do something. So, I have tried to rock the boat, to show the community how I saw things.

Each member of the site gets a blog, mine is fairly popular. I once wrote in response to a question from another blog about feminism and how women are treated differently. I tried, in my own way, to show how most gamers have male privilege, and how this affects how they see -or don’t see- the sexism in gaming and on the community site itself. I brought forward examples of said sexism: objectification of women, discussions in threads that centred on slut-shaming and victim blaming etc.  As expected, I had some dissenters, and even a few advocates. However the response was a straw feminist rant on the front page, one that was described as an almost personal attack.

Point taken. Will shut up now.

Women are also socialized to solve the worlds problems by internalizing everyone’s needs. “If I just play their game, maybe I can be one of them. If I am one of them, if they are happy, I can make the community a better place.” I see that I have tried that as well. If I volunteer more, I will be liked more. If I am liked more, I can have more respect and people will take me seriously.  Nope. that doesn’t happen.

So the big question: how much does one take? Do you try to stay on and keep fighting the good fight, or do you leave? When do you leave? Is it quitting, or is it staying sane?

I can only answer the question for myself. The time for me to leave is now. I have a year of maternity to look forward to, and I want that year to be filled with positive things. I joined the community while on maternity leave with my first. This seemed like the right time. For the last six months, I have been hit with too much negative. There is no room for me, or my voice there, not really. It’s been made clear. If that makes me a quitter, so be it. I have this blog. If anyone is still interested in what I have to say, they can catch it here.

Now in any break up, it does help to remember the good times; there were many. This community was there when I first got my Xbox, and played on line gaming for the first time. I joined by first clan there, started a few of my own. Went to a Lan to meet these folks and they were wonderful. I’ve seen friends divorce and find new love. I’ve seen babies born, people get married. Kids have gotten sick and the response is fast, vocal and genuinely caring and supportive.

While, yes, some members of the site are vile individuals – it’s only expected in a population of over 17,000 – the grand majority don’t mean to create a space where someone like me is not welcome. But they do. Some are so wonderful and supporting, and I will try to stay in touch with them the best I can.

But all in all: it’s time we move on. I have new opportunities. This blog, while still in its infancy, has allowed me to see a new community. One of my own choosing. I am excited to move on to something new.

Sorry guys. It’s not me; it’s you. Good luck.

I am not the type of person who can be part of a community without being a MAJOR part of it. I can't do something in a half assed way.

Good luck.

I am saddened. Never had any contact with you but enjoyed your blogs. I like different opinions and found yours well written and thought out. Didn't always agree but they always made me think from a different perspective, which I like. And all you slammers, it must be nice and safe in your own little world where everybody thinks like you.

Whatever anyone else will post here the work you have done over the past few years in many capacities is appreciated. Many of the people I have seen rebutting your post here have never done a fucking thing for the site. Some of us that have known and worked with you for some time may feel a little blindsided. I've certainly felt like I have acted with respect and appreciation towards you in the past. However, one thing I'll never do is tell you you are not entitled to your feelings. Leave if you must, but know that you will be missed. Dennis

J-Cat, it was great meeting you in Chitown, lots of fun there, sad to see you packing up but I'm not surprised, this site just never was what you wanted it to be and I don't think that's a terrible thing. I'd still like to consider you a friend and am always available to shoot the shit, grats on the little one.

Good luck, lovie-dovie J-Cat. If its too hard anymore, then it is time to go. You need to have fun, you need to have joy and passion. I hate to see you leaving but....you love that wee baby, be free to be Mommy-Cat. We'll be here if you ever want to come back. Not necessarily "new and improved" - but we'll be here. Peace out.

I've enjoyed conversations with you and having an occasional foil to some of my own views, but this sort of "look at me" farewell post reeks of needy. Good luck in all you do.

Alright I've kept silent long enough, so I've got a few things to say, first Marcie you've been a great friend to me, and I have appreciated our chats in the past and just last night and also helping me with those Government tests last year, but congratulations on the birth of baby "Dougie". I wish you would personally stay around, just take some time away from the site and concentrate on motherhood right now, I was honored when you asked me to get involved and co-mod the new 2Old2Eh!!! Clan, I hope you change your mind and remain involved, even though you told me I'm the guy for the job and I'll do fine in running the clan, As for some of the comments I just read, all I got to say is give me a break, especially you Doodi, your membership has increased by how much in the last couple months due to that wonderful article in OXM, didn't J-Cat have something to do with that?? that's right she did, and never did I see any sort of posting saying thank-you; so before you people hack on her, you haven't got a clue as too how much she promoted this site and some of the clans. Now as to the threads posted, I find some very interesting and others absolute utter nonsense, but I have seen people (both men and women) get literially attacked if their opinions differ from the standard norm, some of these comments I have seen can get quite downright vicious in nature, why??? I honestly don't get it, now with my personality I couldn't care less if someone says some shit about me, this is supppose to be a gaming site, created for adults to interact and socialize and make newer friends. Anyways that's all I got to say on the matter, and remember Marcie I will always stay your friend, even when we disagree, only human nature, good luck with everything, but I want you to take some time away from the site and you may have a change of heart, you will be missed, and as for the people that posted comments of "Good Riddance" etc, you kind of made some of J-Cats points all the more relevant, I don't always agree with everything she says, but I am man enough to be respectful to her as a woman, and that goes for all our female members as well (something to think about!!!)

I'm sure you are going to get a lot of both positive and negative feedback on this. A lot of internet drama. You were and will always be a member of 2old4bs regardless of the drama that seems to generate from 2old2play. You will always have a opening for shotnight even if for obvious reasons you can't drink. peace out.

I'm a little late to the goodbye party....JCat...I never really had any issue with you, or anything you've said or done. We played online together in the past, and always had a good time (even tho my slut ex-wife was involved). I could care less if you stayed or left....its your life, your decision, (while a very abrupt "LOOK AT ME, WATCH ME LEAVE") If i gave two fucks about what everyone said/did/felt, or gave 3 fucks about what people think of me....I'd live a pretty pitiful existence!! Good luck, hope you find what makes you happy Chris

Dawnfades, once again your response sums up my feelings completely. This kind of reminds of those class pictures where everyone else has hands at their sides and there is always 1 person who needs MORE attention than the others. You've seen them. Either a peace sign or a middle finger. Well J, take your peace sign and your "I'm Special" shirt and don't let the 2old2play door hit you on the Gluteus Maximus. (I would have said ASS, but that would probably be sexist in your eyes) You could always take your drama, talents to PCP's new site. I hear they need a blogger of your caliber over there. Too soon?

Wow, I must be in my own little world... Cause I had no idea. I just read all the stuff you had done for the community here and, jeez I never knew. Thats awesome Kat. I feel that many people here can be inappropriate and offensive so i understand your frustrations, and why it would be hard for you to handle. I wish I woulda been paying attention at the time to at least voice my support. Good luck Kat,

Wow...I don't read any blogs for a couple months and this is what I find... I have mixed feeling, JCat. You have some points and as as someone who departed recently I do understand the sentiment. But you also are quite staunch in your view that the site needed to be more PC...your definition of PC. I'm not sure you are being fair expecting that any strong position, no matter how "right" or reasonable you believe it to be, is going to be universally adopted by any internet "community". You're a decent, well meaning person, and you do not deserve some of the comments above. But you shouldn't expect everything to see the world your way. My 2 cents.

I feel like The Dastard - I look away for a a little and this is what happens! ;) First, congrats on the new baby! I think it is healthy when people at points reassess their life, the things they do which demands their energy/focus and decide what still has the most value for him or her to expend efforts. As I read this, I have come to understand you are looking for a community that offers you a more comfortable fit as this one on the whole no longer does for you. Whether I've agreed with them or not, I've always appreciated your passion and the thought you've put into your posts. I think the diversity of views offered here is one one of the greatest strengths and sometimes frustrations of this community. In that view, you had (in my eyes) established yourself as one of the supporting pillars here, so I think it is a sad thing to see you go. I hope in time you'll at least choose to wave every once in a while and let us know you and your family are well and thriving. Best to you, M-

If you wanna leave over one person and call it "the community" or better yet call one article "the thoughts of an entire community" that is fine. Heck if you wanna predict the page views of a not yet written or published article, thats fine too. Crazy, but fine. However, there is no need to link us to your blog. I'm sure you can build your own fan base. You certainly have the ideas and ability to write. Those ideas might not be ones people enjoy here, but there is an arena for everyone. Good luck in building yours. On a side note, I have seen a lot of quick snap judgment moves off the site for a lot of reasons i thought were bizarre, but a mod who gave no such warning to her fellow peeps strikes me as a bit rude. Thats just me i suppose.

Maybe take a break and see how you feel later. I admit that I don't pay much attention to much of the undercurrents that develop here, so maybe I miss most of what you are saying, or can't relate because I am of the male persuasion. That said, you shouldn't just "quit". Perhaps try revising what your expectations should be, or what you hope to get from 17,000 random people where you are unlikely to meet most of them. Think about it like a workplace. If you were to work with 17,000 people, what are the chances that you would be rarely offended or put off by some behavior of a few individuals? There is always going to be a dickhole or two to deal with. I say stick around, but temper your expectations as to how people who can be anonymous will act to garner attention. If you leave, you let the actions of a few dictate how you feel. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" - Eleanor Roosevelt.

What I get out of this, is that the 2o2p community even including other female members shits on women. And that you are not treated fairly. I know there are some asshats and sexism exists here but for fuck sakes the few female members that are here get a fuckload of attention. All you need is boobs and if you blog you will be a superstar. But you are right maybe in the end this is not the place for you. People dont take a lot of shit seriously here and if pictures of boobs and men talking about it get to you then I can see why you'd want to leave. Anyways, I wish you the best in the future JCat. Hope the baby is healthy and everything works out..

I don't know you at all other than sometimes reading your posts which are excellent and thought provoking. I'm having a hard time understanding the sudden I'm done with this community issue. If we all used your same logic about not liking certain things or individuals than I guess we should also give up using the internet or gaming. Any place you go you are always going to run into people or things you don't like or disagree with. Anyway good luck sorry to see you go.

I never want to see anyone leave that does stuff for the site, whether that be blogging, posting, admins, news, gaming everyone contributes to 2old2play in there own way. So for that i think 2old2play loses a small piece of itself when a member leaves like this leaves. We all have opinions about stuff, some people will agree with you and some people will disagree with you, you have to learn to take the good with the bad. I think 2old2play can be made into whatever you want it to be though. I put myself out there daily, and some people love what i post, and some people want to slit my throat, but at the end of the day the fact that i enjoy how im contributing and what im doing is what matters. I was hoping you would see things like that. Ive read people say they feel or have felt unappreciatted for the work or there contributions here. there are tons of people who probably follow you who never say anything. that just how some people are. it doesnt mean what you are doing or have done isnt imporant. anyway, if you choose to leave, then i wish you all the best, i hope your pregnancy goes well, and that you find what you are looking for. I will miss reading your blogs and articles as well as it always helped see things from a different perspecitve. Steve

Well this reads like most of your blogs. I am not being catered to and my desires are not being met as a female gamer or just a person in general. You lament that gaming companies don't make products tailored to your taste while admitting you only buy 4 games a year. Now you have a problem with members at the site because you are not delivered exactly what you demand. Your problem isn't "male privilege" its that your narcissism isn't being fulfilled in almost all aspects of your blogged life.

Everyone saying rude things to J-Cat need to hush. She is entitled to her opinions just like you are. We don't all have to agree but I think everyone deserves some respect.
