The woman expert was saying that this isn't a new thing. It takes years to get into serious debt; this recent resession is a contributing factor, but it's a problem a decade in the making. She said that we should be teaching financial literacy; we don't have any finance courses that are manditory in high school. Great. If we make a finance course in high school manditory... what do we take out?
In high school in Ontario today you need:
- 4 credits in English*
- 3 credits in mathematics
- 2 credits in science
- 1 credit in Canadian history
- 1 credit in Canadian geography
- 1 credit in arts
- 1 credit in health and physical education
- 1 credit in French as a second language
- 0.5 credit in career studies
- 0.5 credit in civics
- New 1 additional credit in English, or French as a second language, or a Native Language, or a classical or an international language, or social sciences and the humanities, or Canadian and world studies, or guidance and career education, or cooperative education**
- New 1 additional credit in health and physical education, or the arts, or business studies, or cooperative education**
- New 1 additional credit in science, or technological education, or cooperative education**
In addition to the compulsory credits, students must complete:
- 12 optional credits***
- 40 hours of community involvement activities
- the provincial literacy requirement
What would you take out? What would you change? When I was in school: 2 credits in math was all that was required. I am glad to see it increased by one. I really think science should be upped by another one. Why? So much of what we need today are critical thinking skills, science teaches that. Or it should. I like the literacy test too. But Geography? Really? One whole credit of Geography and only a half in civics? That one I don't get. 40 hours community service? Excellent.
My optional courses were heavily based in drama and science. I was the only one in "OAC" (advanced) drama who had more than 2 advanced science credits by end of school. So far it has served me well. I know enough about science to translate for those who know nothing of the sort and I can speak up when I do it.
What about you guys: how would you change the high school graduation requirements? What did you take in high school? Are there any odd requirements where you are from?
