So... What would you dump?

Listening to the radio, supposedly most Canadians (like most Americans) are in major debt, credit card debt being a huge chunk of the problem. The woman expert was saying that this isn't a new thing. It takes years to get into serious debt; this recent resession is a contributing factor, but it's a problem a decade in the making. She said that we should be teaching financial literacy; we don't have any finance courses that are manditory in high school. Great. If we make a finance course in high school manditory... what do we take out?

In high school in Ontario today you need:

  • 4 credits in English*
  • 3 credits in mathematics
  • 2 credits in science
  • 1 credit in Canadian history
  • 1 credit in Canadian geography
  • 1 credit in arts
  • 1 credit in health and physical education
  • 1 credit in French as a second language
  • 0.5 credit in career studies
  • 0.5 credit in civics
  •
  • New 1 additional credit in English, or French as a second language, or a Native Language, or a classical or an international language, or social sciences and the humanities, or Canadian and world studies, or guidance and career education, or cooperative education**
  • New 1 additional credit in health and physical education, or the arts, or business studies, or cooperative education**
  • New 1 additional credit in science, or technological education, or cooperative education**

In addition to the compulsory credits, students must complete:

  • 12 optional credits***
  • 40 hours of community involvement activities
  • the provincial literacy requirement

What would you take out? What would you change? When I was in school: 2 credits in math was all that was required. I am glad to see it increased by one. I really think science should be upped by another one. Why? So much of what we need today are critical thinking skills, science teaches that. Or it should. I like the literacy test too. But Geography? Really? One whole credit of Geography and only a half in civics? That one I don't get. 40 hours community service? Excellent.

My optional courses were heavily based in drama and science. I was the only one in "OAC" (advanced) drama who had more than 2 advanced science credits by end of school. So far it has served me well. I know enough about science to translate for those who know nothing of the sort and I can speak up when I do it.

What about you guys: how would you change the high school graduation requirements? What did you take in high school? Are there any odd requirements where you are from?

I agree with VR...but aside from the 12 optional...I would say...Canadian Geography. In HS...c'mon...teach that in Grade School/Middle School.

When I was in grade 10 (here in British Columbia anyways) we had to take a consumer course, which when my wife took it 2 years later it was called Business Ed. It dealt with credit and finances as part of it. It was mandatory, nobody had a choice. I don't know if it is still required today but for those who paid attention in it, it sure taught you a few things abouut how the world works. That just made me feel really old....

Well, there's a couple of obvious things here. 1. Canadian History. Nothing really important happened in Canada's history, the course is mostly about former great hockey players. Since no one can afford new textbooks, they all end with Wayne Gretzky. 2. French as a 2nd Language. Quit kissing Quebec's ass. Let the Quebecois learn English as a first language and make speaking French illegal, with the exception of it's use in picking up chicks. I think they mostly speak french there just to piss Crimson Fox off, anyway. This message brought from the Bureau of Making Everywhere Else as Great as America.

I would 86 the French as a second language. Else make it an optional course at least.

And Canadian Geography. There's one road in Canada, it goes from Halifax to Vancouver. Everyone on Canada lives on this one road. The answer to every question in Canadian Geography is "on the road".

There is plenty of room in those 12 optional credits for some financial literacy courses. Most of those 12 optional credits are a waste of time.
