Underappreciated literature...

I read aloud often; having a two year old will do that. Only when you read aloud to you gain an appreciation for kiddie books. Now I mean the real kiddie books, the ones for very small minds. The ones with a very, very simple story: usually board books. They have to have a cadence or else when you read them it's difficult to make it through. Trust me on this. If a book has the wrong flow it makes it a rough read. Not the first time, but the 8th time in a row you will want to stick a pencil in your ear.

This was one that I loved, and Erica wanted it read to her about 6-7 times in a row. It's called "Read to your Bunny" by Rosemary Wells.

Read to your bunny often,

It's twenty minutes of fun.

It's twenty minutes of moonlight,

And twenty minutes of sun.

Twenty old-favourite minutes,

And twenty minutes brand new.

Read to your bunny often

And

Your Bunny will read to you.

Sad part? We got the book at a second hand store. Mint condition: like it was never opened. Inscription on the inside? Welcome to Kindergarten with the name of a public school.

Other ones that I love are Goodnight Moon, the hungry caterpillar, Bear Snores On, Little Quack, Little Quack's New Friend. Little Quack is awesome... you count along with the quackulator as each duckling jumps into the pond for the first time. Little Quack's new friend has some amazing alliteration the flow is some of the best I've read. Bear Snores On is just a *bit* too long, but it's a good pick up. Don't get the sequel, where bear has a springtime party ... it's not nearly as good.

Ugh... the Hungry Caterpillar? For some reason, that book just bores me to tears. Hippos Go Berserk, on the other hand... There is one fine book. If only my daughter liked it.

Goodnight Moon and Hungry Caterpillar are required fo sho. Sydney loves Spot, but I have no idea why. I think it is because she likes the flaps on the pages. She also loves Goodnight Gorilla, but I just make up words for each page since there are hardly any written words besides "Goodnight _____". I kind of like books like that where where you get to make up the story.

When the kids were really little....the board book blue hat green hat was my kids fav...it teaches colors with a bit of humor and after reading it so often the kids could "read" it to me which was great to them. Another board book fav was "Dear Zoo". Others include: "Good Night, Little Bear", "Pigs Can't Fly", "Pigsty", "Good Night Sun, Hello Moon", "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly", "The Saggy Baggy Elephant" (sons fav) "How do Dinosaurs say Good Night" (also sons fav) and "Fancy Nancy"(daughters fav) along with any "Junie B. Jones" books for my daughter. We, kinda like to read.... ;) :)
