Shared on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 09:02Today marks the start of my third month using EA Active 2 as my main workout, and the first day I didn’t have to do the “Can You See Me Now?” Exercise.
CYSMN is a hardcore exercise that works out your body but really puts the hammer on your mind. This hidden workout within a workout pushes my heart rate to the max and it usually pops up when I’m doing floor exercises. As you settle down to the floor to start push ups or a similar exercise, the sensor states….
STAND TO ALLOW THE SENSOR TO FIND YOU
You stand up. Go through Kinect recognition. Say Continue and attempt to sink back down… oh wait!
STAND TO ALLOW THE SENSOR TO FIND YOU
Complete this rep 7-10 times or long enough that you are screaming CONTINUE like a wounded walrus and skip the exercise.
In all seriousness, this issue was easily dealt with by something I don’t have much of: patience. When the game started into the floor exercise, all you had to do was wait for it to “sense” the standing figure then it would ask you to sit down and face the sensor. That way it was actively tracking your form, and could more easily recognize the shift from standing to sitting silhouette. This worked 100% of the time for me once I figured it out.
EA has a different approach to fixing the issue: take out the sensor part. Now the floor exercises are just like warming up and cooling down. No reps are tracked, it is a follow along segment. Considering how important floor exercises are (push ups, sit ups, star planks, etc) and how many people struggle with those reps, I think they are doing a disservice to their users by removing the sensing part of the exercise. It feels like they dumbed down the game so Casual players could get through it easier (which enflames Hardcore players like me). With the Kinect voice recognition they could have at least left in a verbal rep counter. This is a step back EA, and I hope a temporary one. Already the EA Boards are alive with negative comments concerning the change.
Pushing through the tough floor exercises was something that tested my willpower. Without the cajoling of my Pixelated Trainer I am not going low enough or fast enough. Dear EA, I NEED those reps tracked to make the most of my workout. Following along doesn’t afford the time I need to use proper form and complete all the reps. Please put the sensing part of the floor exercises back in! It was worth the CYSMN glitch.
ProTip: Change the batteries in your Heart Rate sensor monthly. I knew that having a resting rate of 52 was too good to be true.
UPDATE: Of course right after I post this I hear that you can change the floor exercise setting from automatic to manual. Not sure what that means exactly, but I am going to hit that switch and see for my next workout.
Update2: Yup, switching floor exercise option moves you back over to tracking with the sensor - and the same stand up sit down dance.
