E3 Goal: Give Treyarch a Chance

I played Call of Duty 3 for all of an hour before tossing the disc back in the case and throwing it the river.

I only played Call of Duty: World at War for Capture the Flag & Nazi Zombies (two things my beloved IW had not provided in COD4)

Do those two statements apply to you?

I sneer when I hear Treyarch's name, and I DON'T KNOW WHY.

------------

Over the past few weeks I've asked myself WHY do I detest Treyarch? Between the demise of (what we know to be) Infiinty Ward, and the recent release of Call of Duty: The War Collection , I'm looking toward the fall and release of COD Black Ops.

Aside from quick brushes with COD3 & WaW, I've never really played their games. I didn't get into Spiderman beyond the demo, and never even considered Quantuum of Solace.

My first thoughts when I recall Treyarch games are maps: maps of clutter, maps of gray/brown/green, maps that are unecessarily complex. I distinctly remember the straw that broke the camel's back for COD3: playing multiplayer on "that fish map in France" I got hung up on a piece of wood laying on the ground right from spawn about 6 times in a row.

I don't think of Nazi Zombies.  It's like a totally seperate game for me. With hindsight, I LOVE Nazi Zombies. Even with all the terror of those last few rounds, and the cost of the new maps, I love the concept, the teamwork it required, and the screams of laughter it evoked from me.

So why do I dislike Treyarch?

A few good buddies of mine from XBL went to the Black Ops preview event in May.  Their Twitters were bubbling with excitement for this new game. Telling me how awesome and laid back the Treyarch guys are, how much they care about their community, how much *I* will love this game.

------------

During a tour of the Infinity Ward Studios last year, there was a moment where a key IW person let loose a little rant about Treyarch. It was rough. It was dirty. He sneered throughout the diatribe, and I recognize the reflection of that sneer on my face. *DINGDINGDING*

I don't think I despise Treyarch at all.  I think that other games have overshadowed theirs for me. I think they haven't produced one that strikes my heart and makes my thumbs ache to play it.... yet.

So Treyarch here's your chance. Woo away. Delight my eyes with maps I can navigate without stumbling. Assault my ears with ping ping ping.

I'll see you at E3.

Treyarch is an OK developer saddled with living up to a great series, I don't hate them for trying, I just don't like their games. I will not be buying their new game, instead I will be trying DICE's take on making a COD-like game, Medal of Honor. Join me JeepChick, don't give Treyarch a 3rd chance to disappoint you.

I loved cod 3 and W@W. Hated MW2 and for that matter the general attitude of IW. I'm siked as fuck for black ops. To each his own u guess.

I think I feel a bit bad for dismissing them for so long. Holding out the olive branch extension for my controller. :)

I share a bit of your indifference for Treyarch. I've always attributed it to the fact that IW built the CoD franchise, not Treyarch. For me, that’s one strike against Treyarch. Treyarch was brought in by Activision to milk cash out of the franchise. Strike two. Treyarch’s first effort flopped publicly and personally, the only CoD title to do so. Strike three. I discounted WaW before it was ever released. I ended up enjoying it much more than I expected. Coop was sweet, and I think WaW maps were better than MW1. Zombies didn’t float my boat, but I’ve admitted before that their addition added value to not just the title, but to the franchise as it goes forward. WaW was a quality game. It gives me hope that Black Ops will be as well. And since the IW of old is dead, Treyarch seems to represent the future of CoD. So I’m really hoping they can woo you, and in turn, me as well. Looking forward to everyone’s E3 reports.

IW's indifference toward their customers once the intial purchase was made is why I have always favored Treyarch. With the release of MW2 without a beta and the fact that to this day it's still plauged by exploits and hacks while they churn out $20 map packs should be enough for anyone to write them off for good. As for IW creating the "Call of duty" franchise. Yup they sure did....but I thought it was better in 1999 when it was called Medal of Honor. They did most certainly create the engine for COD4, which has been used in all of the following titles. However the entire franchise was created via the Quake engine. Thus wouldn't IW just be hacks for using someone else's engine to create their game?

MW was my first COD and it rocked. W@W was my first introduction to the concept that the sequels were produced by different developers. I found that Treyarch was more attentive to the user experience. Nazi zombies,4 player co-op campaign and a detailed online stats page. They really raised the bar for the next sequel and that's where IW fell short. 2 player Spec Ops is a pale imitation of 4 player co-op campaign, there are no zombies and no online stats. But Treyarch's MP experience was, in a word, TERRIBLE. Horrible monochromatic maps and a dismal respawn system caused me to only play until I got to a level 30 before I moved on to other games. While I'm not thrilled with all the gimmicks IW has added to MW2, I made it to level 70 before another game dragged me away(BFBC2). However, I have recently gotten a 2nd wind and will probably put the MW2 disk back in (something I never did with W@W). That said, Treyarch needs to step up their MP game. What they have to do is hire better graphic and map designers and if they are using the MW2 engine, dial back the MW2 gimmicks.

It should also be noted that Treyarch never had the whole team working on a game. They were always split up between 2-3 games. CoD:BO has the ENTIRE studio working on the game. As a fan of W@W(I liked it better than MW2)I'm so pumped for this game!

@YEM: That's another reason Treyarch doesn't get luvin. Activision didn't commit them 100% to CoD which suggests Activision never committed them to making CoD games anything other than cash cows. Now that IW is dead and Treyarch is apparently leading the franchise, it would be silly to have the Treyarch studio doing anything other than CoD.
