For whatever reason, our home is a magnet for praying mantises (I think that is that right word). Just the other weekend, I had to remove several plants around our porch in order to install a french drain. Upon doing so, I think I came across 4 of them. Yesterday I was outside when I noticed one on the side of our house, having a little snack!

nom nom nom!

IS that a caterpillar? It seems too short to be a caterpillar but that's the only thing i can think of that would be fuzzy. ANyway they're a cool insect. I think the girl is the big one like you took a picture of and i believe she eats the male after they do the nasty.

Thats beautiful. How close did you get? is the mantis not afraid? or may be too busy with food.

Yes it is a caterpillar! I had to get real close because the my camera kept not focusing when I zoomed in. The close I got (I was about 3 - 5 inches away) the mantis would turn its head and shield its food as if saying "this is mine fool!".
