You're Fired!!

So after becoming the legitimate "Manager" of my department of where I work (I've managed it for quite some time, but have finally earned the title of "Manager"), I have recently been endowed with the power to hire and fire employees. I work at a Lab, and I manage the office, as well as shipping and receiving. We have (well, had) 5 drivers that deliver all of the local stuff. So we had this one guy who was off the wall to say the least. He was in his late 50's and divorced twice. He lived just across the street and was related to the owners (by marriage). This guy had a bad habit of saying inappropriate things to the lovely women that worked in various offices where he delivered. After repeated warnings (from complaints I received) I requested to fire him. The owners did not want to because of, well, he was related basically. I told them that the driver is useless to me because now I can't send him to Office A, B, C and D etc etc. That makes for a very inefficient delivery system. Well guess what, just this week, I get another phone call about him making a few ladies in one of our customers offices feel uncomfortable. BANHAMMER TIME!! I a feeling the bosses wouldn't want to fire him outright. They said, "well just wait until he calls you to see why he is not getting any hours this week, and then let him go". I said, even though he screwed up several times, he is still a human being and I need to call him now and let him go instead of waiting around. It was kinda weird firing someone. I never had to do that before. It was over the phone and not in person because the bosses didn't want him to set foot in the building again. Oh well, it's nice to know that I sort of have the power to do that now!!

Firing someone is hard, you did the right thing of letting him know right away as compared to let him hang around without explanation.

Damn dude - kickin' ass and taking names. There is a good and bad to every decision like that; it all kinda shakes out and works out.
