Shared on Tue, 04/10/2007 - 16:39While this past Easter weekend in Indiana was on the far side of unreasonably cold, I still got four days off from my indentured servitude and got to spend it catching up on chores. The chores are usually the part of the holiday weekend I look forward to, as familial obligations consist of trying not to feel too uncomfortable while my mother and paternal grandmother exchange biting and caustic discourse.
Went down to the family cottage (it's not nearly as bourgeois or impressive as it sounds, nor as much as I'd like it to be) on Saturday and Monday . It's on a small lake in the southern portion of the state. I had to stain and eurathane some interior stairs we replaced over the winter. You can't, of course, use the steps while they're drying...so the only way to get from the upstairs to the downstairs is to go outside and walk around. Needless to say, this sucks as the bedrooms and TV are upstairs and the kitchen downstairs. Drive an hour and a half, do a couple hours of work, drive home. Saturday was without interest, but Monday was just warm enough to pull out my kayak and do a tour around the lake. While out, saw what I think were two of these.
They were absolutely fascinating. I'd come up silently on one in stealth mode. It would see me at the last second and quickly dive under water. It would not surface for at least a good 20 seconds and end up being 30 yards away. I played with them for about a half hour before they finally got pissed and flew off.
Best part about the weekend :)
