Fight Hate

Reverend Phelps, the pastor of the Westboro Church of Topeka Kansas, is coming to my home-town of Indianapolis this afternoon. But he's not here to see a race or catch a Colts game. Rather he's bringing his followers and their God Hates Fags signs to picket North Central High School.

NCHS's performing arts department is putting on The Laramie Project, a play about Laramie, Wyoming's reaction to the hate crime murder of the openly-gay Matthew Shepard in 1998. The play is "about the ingredients of hate that led to the death of Shepard at the hands of some homophobic young men, but it's also about the response of the community after he died." Phelps, of course, feels this is transgression against God and everything he stands for. Signs he's used protesting previous performances have read, "Matt is still burning in hell, get over it!"

In response to Phelps' impending protest, they've set up a Phelps-a-thon to raise money for the North Central Gay and Lesbian Alliance and the Indy Youth Group. If you feel as strongly about this man as I do, you may donate any amount from a few cents up at phelps-a-thon.com/northcentral.html.

Even if you aren't a supporter of gay and lesbian rights, beware of Phelps. He's the same person that's been organizing the protests at the funerals of U.S. military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanastan. Essentially, he provides something for everyone not to love.

I don't understand how can someone have so much hate within him.

Amazing how some people can still be so concerned with what others do in their own houses... Many hetero people have had multiple husbands or wives during the course of their lives...many gay people just want one. Isn't it time that the world focused on some of the hate in the world, and less on the love..whether same sex or different sex?

A funny part in Bruno was he and another actor handcuffed nude runing right into the God Hates Fags protest walk.......If only people spent their time doing productive things. I hope someone eggs them.

Im not a big supporter of gay rights, however I think that man and his followers are pure evil, and what he does is more upsetting morally to me then anything he is "protesting" I would love to kick him in the nuts.

Just got back from the protest. I went there mainly to shoot pictures and not to show open support for or against the protesters in the interest of getting good material. But the cops made everyone without press credentials pick one side of the street or the other. The Phelps brigade had only about eight protesters, but they had really nice signs. There was a really touching moment where they broke into the song God Bless America, except they changed the words to God Damn America. Immediately before arriving at the high school, they were picketing a Jewish community center. The counter-protesters numbered in my estimation about 200 or so. They did not have as nice of signs. Left about ten minutes early so I could get some shots from the "wrong" side of the street on the way back to my car, but while I was there the whole thing was peaceful, if not respectful. I'll likely have some pics up tomorrow if anyone is interested. I haven't seen Bruno yet, but that sounds awesome.

Any updates? I work across the street from North Central, and from what I understand he and his people will be protesting all weekend.

Have some decent pictures...not as many as I'd like, but it's tough steadying a five pound camera and lens in the rain while also holding an umbrella. I didn't get to work on getting them posted today as it was the wife's birthday. Maybe tomorrow afternoon? I've not heard anything about an all weekend long protest. Personally, I don't think they have enough horses in their stable. As noted above, they only got 6-8 people to show up yesterday. Then again, it was crappy weather. Silly fair-weather zealots.
