In the grand scheme of things, we have been very lucky in the kids health department. We have only had one kid with a broken bone (I however, have had two or three since we've been married- all toes and fingers) A handful of ear infections, and a few cases of rotovirus. We seem to have started a new late winter trend though. Smashed fingers.
I will warn you now. The pictures are cringe worthy.
Last year on Dylan's birthday He got his finger smashed in the linen closet while playing hide n go seek. It was sad.

Thankfully its completely healed, and all he has to show for it is a slightly shorter nail bed on that finger.
This tuesday we had some friends over, and the kids were playing HnGS. This time it was Andrew's finger that got smashed while hiding in the linen closet. (I think I need to veto the linen closet even if it was linen closets in different houses.) He smashed it pretty good too. Im not sure if the nail is pulled from the bed, or if the nail split just above the bed. Either way OUCH.
I didnt take him in because when the same thing happened last year they told me that there wasnt much they could do for it, just to keep it clean and watch for any infection. But when it was swollen enough tonight that the skin started to split on the sides of the finger nail I decided I needed to take him in.
So two and a half hours later and a trip to Xray later, we found out the bone is crushed. Since the bone is crushed and its an open wound he has the risk of a staph infection. So we got RX'd a ton of oral/topical antibiotics and got a referral to the orthopedist.

I have never seen one of my kids in so much pain. It has been very, very sad. I was very grateful tonight when the doc offered a RX for some codine for him.
Hopefully the trip with the Orthopedist goes well tomorrow and he isnt in an cast or anything like that, because 7 year olds and casts are just a gross combination. Oh and cross you fingers he is still ok for basketball in march.

You did a great thing by taking him in to get check. If it would have gotten infected things could turn form bad to worse very quickly. Hope he gets better.

Oh man, that is painful. I smashed my middle finger when I was a kid in a pile of bricks. I know, a pile of bricks - wtf? The nail died and fell off, but it grew back. Bummer about basketball. Something tells me a crushed thumb isn't going to quite make it in time.
