The oh so Magic Treehouse

I have had a hard time getting Andrew, my 7.5 year old "into" reading. He used to lay on his bed for hours and look at his picture encyclopedias, but getting him to actually read stuff has been a struggle for the past two years. Its one of those mommy worries that I fret about constantly in the back of my mind. Its been a common topic in my nightly prayers. Im sure that God is sick of me asking him what I can do to help Andrew develop a love of reading.
Anyone that knows me knows that I LOVE to read. I devour books. I can easily polish off a 800 page book in a day and a half, and I have been known to read books over and over and over because they have become like friends to me. So to think that Andrew didnt even want to read and got so discouraged by it, truly made me panic.
I was at target this weekend and I stood there in front of the 5-7 year old and 7-9 year old books for quite some time. He is in a hard place, too big for the little books, and too little for the bigger books. I wanted something that would cause him to have to reach, but not something too discouraging. It was in between Captain Underpants and the magic treehouse books. The Treehouse books won simply because they have less words on each page. I handed it to him for him to carry out to the car, trying to be casual about it enough that he didnt sense my desperation lol. Either God got sick of hearing the same thing every night, or I got lucky, because Andrew had read the first chapter by the time we got home. (I will give the props to the big guy, I figure it cant hurt.) I was hoping that he had the book red by next friday. In fact I bribed him that if he did, I would buy him a candy bar.  As of last night Andrew was on chapter 8 of 10.
And there was much rejoicing throughout the land!
There will be another trip to Target early this week to pick up the next few books in the series. Considering the Series has 39 books in it, we might have to get him his own shelf on the bookcase. Hopefully this also means I can hold out on the Underpants books for another year or two.

My children loves them also. The library is a great way to save bookshelf space :) We go through the books so fast I don't think it's worth buying them. Also there is a great series for that age called "Andrew Lost" check it out at the library if you can't find it at the store.

Congrats. It's funny, we've been on the verge of the exact opposite problem. My 9 yr old has been skipping quiz questions at school and skipping teeth brushing so she has time to read. And she turns her light on after she's in bed to sneak in an extra chapter. It's great she loves to read, but she's starting to shirk important stuff so she can do more of it.
