The boys diagnostic assessment...

Some of you who've read my previous entries regarding my youngest boy are well aware of some of the issues we've had here in the home when dealing with his Aspergers Disorder.

I've recently recieved his official assessment and let me tell you...I'm confussed more now than ever before.

Diagnostic Assessment

Axis I

299.80 Asperger's Disorder.

314.01 Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder,Combined Type

307.21 Transient Tics Disorder, Recurrent

Axis IV

Stressors are social situations

Axis V

Current GAF is 55

Is there a Dr in the house? Damn, if I had to go over everything that is listed in this assessment I'ld be here forever...thank god we go back to the Dr on Tuesday.

I love my boy very much...he's really a good kid. I guess the hardest thing for a parent is to look at a child and wonder what we could have done to spot things earlier in life. For now the hardest thing for me to do is to acknowlege the fact that it's looking more and more as if I need to file for disabilty for the boy.

Me think it's finally time to join up with other parents of Asperger children. I want to thank my wife, who is not the mother of my kids, for all of her support, love and understanding, when it comes to my kids..I love ya Deb...you've helped me get thru this more than you'll ever know. I thought that after raising my boys alone for 13 years, I'ld never be able to find anyone willing to stand by my side...and you've been there with me from the day we met.

By all means Lester, hook up with a support group. They can be a wonderful means of information, if nothing else. My question is, if this disorder had been spotted earlier in his life, what could you have done different?

Good Luck Zig. My own boy goes in on Thursday for an assessment. Feeling ya. You're lucky to have someone- even better that you aren't taking it for granted. Good show.

Well, to look on the good side, at least he was rated a GAF 55. Kind of reads like a high-functioning Aspergers. Maybe with some social/group therapy he can raise that GAF. I'll second Devonsangel, get thee to a support group. Find out about support options in your area.

Thanks all for the feedback/support. Odds are if this was spotted earlier it would have helped the family and school better deal with some of his behaviors. We've known for about a year that this was the direction in which we were headed regarding the aspergers diagnosis but had to wait for all the proper documentation....at least now we know where to go to help better things for the long haul :)
