I just got a 30 page print packet for some kind of steel cabinet to quote for building. I got this nice little drawing that shows the end result and these 29 other nice little drawings that show the dimensions of each part.
Seems perfect right?
Would be if the cabinet had distinguishable SQUARE PARTS! That's right, its made up of all square sized pieces that vary just a little bit from each other and the other 29 drawings don't have quantities of each part listed or any indication of where they are placed in the main drawing and it's not full scale so it won't help me to measure anything on the drawing.
And lets not forget that nowhere, in any of these prints, does it tell me WHAT KIND OF STEEL IT'S MADE OUT OF!! I guess that's not that important considering there is only 30 different types that we stock alone...
If any of you are Mechanical Designers please don't take this as a direct attack on you because I have worked with a few that are on their A game but I run into less and less everyday.
It makes me wonder..... Is our generation the last that was taught to pay attention to detail??

That statement is what scares me the most.
I have heard but cannot confirm that here in the U.S. , employers are more and more, hiring the experienced guy regardless of how many degrees they have due to the current economic state.

I'm in QA and have to deal constantly with Engineers who draw up prints in such a way as to be impossible to freaking measure them in the real world.
And one in ten might actually have touched whatever it is they're working on, let alone seen one outside their computer screen...
Okay, this one might be too close to home...
Leaving...
I'll be better tomorrow...

My money is that a civil made those plans.
