when is america going to realize that smoking pot is not the equivalent of murdering babies?

i don't do it. i don't like it. but i totally defend the rights of those who do. there is a difference, as with all things, between use and abuse. an american hero is going to be blackballed because he smoked pot? come on. if we blackballed every politician who ever did anything illegal, there would be no government.

hopefully sponsors will just focus on the good he did and realize that most of us don't give a shit what he does with his personal time.

he smoked pot...oh no, it's the end of the world!

The only thing I object to is that you said you respect peoples RIGHT to it. No one has a RIGHT to it. People have opinions about it. People choose to do it...or not. But smoking it is not a right, it is illegal...which by definition sort of makes it NOT a right. Now change the law...and I will agree with you!

The question you have to ask yourself is if any votes he made were made when his thinking was impaired by pot-use at the moment. Athletes are on a leash and have to handover their agenda's to the doping-board. Allah forbid they win by 0.00001 of a second because of poppy-seeds. Politicians on the other hand are relatively scotfree in what they do, but yet are trusted with making decisions that affect thousands. I would like those decisions to be made when those politicians are in full command of their faculties.

But pot's bad! McGruff the Crime Dog taught us that in elementary school. Plus, the commercials say that if you smoke pot you contribute to terrorism. Let's see, a pot-smoker has the will, determination, and personal fortitude to set an Olympic record which will likely stand for decades. Tell me again how light marijuana use is dangerous?

I can (sorta) understand it. some athletes (and other endorsers... is that a term?) sign "morality" contracts. They can't be seen doing certain things... it's an escape hatch. If Phelps was seen doing something REALLY bad, his sponsors could dump him. I get that. It's the contract he signed. To be fair: I have NO idea if this sort of stuff is in his contract or not. It's tough: illegal is still illegal. The law does not make any distinction between "legal" and "well it's TECHNICALLY illegal... but c'mon!" We only have different punishments.

Boy this is a loaded topic. Personally I feel that a person has a right to ingest what ever chemical they choose, be it alcohol (which at one time was illegal in this country also) or pot which was legal here once upon a time ago. No matter what a person's poison they should have the right to choose what to do in private as long as no one else is endangered or threatened by it.
