Suitable Surroundings

too many times i've heard people say that they were not frightened by a scary movie or scary game. when did you play/watch it, i ask. they usually respond as i suspected; during daylight in a non conducive to fear atmosphere. real good. that'll work just fine.

following is an excerpt from the story The Suitable Surroundings from one of my favorite authors, Ambrose Bierce.

"Well! Has the reader no duties corresponding to his privileges? You have paid five cents for that newspaper. It is yours. You have the right to read it when and where you will. Much of what is in it is neither helped nor harmed by time and place and mood; some of it actually requires to be read at once - while it is fizzing. But my story is not of that character. It is not `the very latest advices' from Ghost-land. You are not expected to keep yourself au courant with what is going on in the realm of spooks. The stuff will keep until you have leisure to put yourself into the frame of mind appropriate to the sentiment of the piece - which I respectfully submit that you cannot do in a street car, even if you are the only passenger. The solitude is not of the right sort. An author has rights which the reader is bound to respect."

he tries to convey the same point i do, albeit towards supernatural literature. i think it's worth a read and the moral should be taken to heart.

following is the link to the complete story. i suggest you read it alone at night...in the dark. enjoy.

I read 'Salem's Lot mostly at night with the neighbor's cat always making noise outside my window, and that book creeped me out. Also, I watched Event Horizon late at night by myself, and was a little disturbed. Not only is the character's setting and mood important, but so is the reader's. However, I have never been scared by a video game, no matter what the setting is. I have jumped in surprise while playing Doom 3, and I found The Suffering to be quite disturbing, but never was I scared. Great post, Lux. Right up my alley.

We (my husband and I) used to always play Resident Evil together: all the lights off.. the whole bit. Last time we played I was pregnant, and I could NOT handle it. Never mind that we played the bloody game a ridiculous number of times... but the hormones made me NUTS. anyway... with survival horror type games: how can the developers create such a psychologically frightening story, when the ultimate control is in the hands of the gamer? It's a tough thing..

J-Cat: Horror relies on underbelly-fears, like being afraid in your very own basement in the dead of night and you can't find the light-switch. The human-brain has a very distinct part of the brain set aside to primal fear, and that part works autonomously from your civilized brain, so to speak. Your primal brain keeps you from puting yourself in harm's way. It controls your gut-feeling, in a way. Another thing why horror is so scary is because you know what's going to happen in 99% of the scenario's.

Cryptic: I totally get what you are saying: but if I get scared: I can always pause the game... or go into my inventory or backtrack to someplace"safe". I can break that fear rising within me... It's really just a game design question I have been mulling over.

I have one thing to say here...don't play Doom 3 in the dark with surround sound headphones. :-)
