Amazing bad luck

There was an article in the AP news today about a florida woman who was killed by a stingray. In an amazing example of bad luck the woman was killed by the seemingly most random series of events in the universe.

"We routinely investigate boating accidents and fatalities," she said.

What's not common, Pratt said, is for spotted eagle rays (which can have a wingspan of up to 10 feet and can weigh 500 pounds) to be involved in such an accident. They are not aggressive, though they do tend to leap from the water.

"It's very unusual -- a very rare occasion," she said. " ... They do leap out of the water, but the chances of the eagle ray and a boat crossing paths is extremely rare."

 

 

Ferraro said the spotted eagle ray which hit Zagorski weighed between 75 and 80 pounds, and its wingspan was between 5 and 6 feet long.

According to the Associated Press, Zagorski was sitting in the front seat of a fishing boat going 25 mph across the Atlantic Ocean near the side of Vaca Key when the ray struck Zagorski. Zagorski was knocked backward onto the floor of the boat. The ray then landed in the 25-foot boat and died from the impact, officials said.
