Another Year In The Stone Age

Well, my 2 year contract with Verizon is up in a few days. Delighted by the chance to go shopping for a new phone I eagerly began reading reviews and doing my research. I compared operating systems and bluetooth and all that fun crap. I finally decided that wanted a blackberry curve. After all is said and done it would cost me $50, not too bad right? I don't need a data plan right now although it would be nice, so I just want the phone for now. I figure when I get a better job or come into some money I can justify another $360 a year to the phone company. 'Till then I can sync my calendars and be a little more organized.

Well, turns out that verizon will not let you get a blackberry without a $30 per month data plan. Yes, I'm a little behind the times. Did some looking and found that ATT doesn't require a data plan. Great news right? Except that when I talked to verizon yesterday they looked up my wife's employer and found that we are eligible for almost 20% off. That kind of makes it hard to switch carriers.

Combine that with my super sensible (and prudish) wife who doesn't understand the need for electronic gadgets and gizmos and it looks like another lame ass verizon phone for L3FTY boy.

EDIT:

I called both ATT customer service and sales and they couldn't tell me if they would offer a corporate discount.  I then called my wife's employer who couldn't tell me either, although they thought that it was possible.  I then googled att corporate discount and found this link on howard forums.

https://www.wireless.att.com/business/authenticate/

When all the dumb real life people can't help you, turn to the interweb.  Apparently, att offers a 20% discount.  we may have some wiggle room here folks. and per jolly below, the maps show great coverage for me in this area and everyone with att around here says they have good service.  Verizon blows in parts of the NE, boston in particular.  YRMV.

Why would you want a Blackberry unless you were going to get the data plan? Just for the "eyecatcher" aspect?

I'll check with Att millfire. still may be a chance I guess. I've read that they operate on a different type of network, how does that translate into real life use? Verizon service is fine around town but I can't really get a signal inside. Too bad, since I don't have a landline. As far as VZW service...I've never had an issue that they wouldn't solve, and they've always been polite. Can't say the same for stupid sprint. Johnny- I did a whole lot of looking around comparing and contrasting and I really like the overall look, feel, and features of the phone. I'm not big into touch screens, slider phones, or flip open for keyboard phones. Yes, it is the sexiness, but it is also very functional and "grown up". I also would eventually like to add data, just not today.

I think it depends on the part of the country you are in, but ATT in the SE sucks something terrible. Dropped calls, dead zones all over the place and their terrible customer service. For the 18 months I have had Verizon, no problems at all. I get great coverage, even when I would go kayaking up in north Georgia, when none of my friends had coverage. So, I'm thinking the service is geographical, because around here, ATT is crap and I will never go back.
