I'm hooked on a heartbeat

My wife works in cardiac rehab so she is all about numbers.  Heart rate, calories, lipids, blah blah blah.  Me on the other hand...when I work out I try to stay right at the threshold of throwing up or passing out, that's how I gauge the intensity of my workouts.  Well, earlier this week she convinced me to wear a heart rate monitor like this one to the gym.

It's not that uncomfortable once you get it fitted right and you really forget that you have it on.  The one she has is a cheapo and just tells the basics: how long you were in your optimum range, how long you worked out, your average heart rate, your highest heart rate and your calories burned.  For any doubting meatheads out there let me tell you, this thing is cool.  I found it very useful to gauge my body's recovery between sets, and make sure that I didn't drop out of my target zone.  It also confirms what I already know, that power cleans are a bitch, that's when my rate hit 185.

It's also great for cardio.  I'm still working my way back into the gym so I'm not going to crazy.  I've found that a heart rate of 160-165 is pretty comfortable for 20 minutes.  With this monitor I can make sure that I'm not slacking or getting distracted by whatever's on the tv at the gym.

If you are counting calories or if you are just competitive with yourself, it's awesome to find out what you've accomplished at the end of the night.  In my case I'm trying to put on about 20lbs while keeping my body fat below 15% so it helps to measure how many extra calories I burn off each night.

Long story short, this thing is worth it's cost and is a great tool.  Whenever the wife let's me take it I do.  Its addicting to check your calories every 5 minutes in addition to all the benefits above.
